He did not help his cause when he suggested we had to move past Reagan.
Reagan would send over 200 Marines to a hotel as peacekeepers and then maybe give a speech about their deaths.
I do not consider Mrs. Reagan authoritative on such things.
Reagan was correct to not let that change his strategic foreign policy agenda.
Do you know what his administration was doing at the moment that guy killed those 241 Marines?
should I check the archives? Why didn’t he do anything after? Have things escalated since then?
This should be interesting.
Yeah, you should check and see if we brought down the Soviet Empire and ended the Cold War.
At the time that guy blew up the Marines in garrison, the invasion of Grenada had already started, within 47 hours the Army was engaged in ground combat.
People don’t seem to remember, or to even know, that Reagan had a massive military operation against the the Soviets already started during that bombing.
You know Romney isn’t running, right?
Strawmen are pointless on our side and downright pathetic ehrn they have no meaningful context.
I hope he has the grace and good sense for the 2016 presidential race to adopt Reagan's wisdom and drop caring who gets the credit (Reagan's little slogan in his office, "You can accomplish anything if you don't care who gets the credit"). I pray Gingrich puts his talents to better use, because they are needed. I'll bet a lot of people here have zero clue as to the great methodical approach and philosophy he put forth during the last primary for reducing the scope of government in education. One's heart thrilled to read it.
But we need ... to break away from the Republican party, Patton, I'm sorry to say that I am really thinking that for the presidential at least it will be necessary. The Republican party is truly a party for idiots, when that party asks its members to vote for a representative who fully embraces the same government model as the opposition party.
People understand and resent that they're being offered a shallow choice between More Government Crap 1 (Democrat), or More Government Crap 2 (Republican). People know that they want less government and more freedom, and that neither party offers it.
We need a Second Party, at least for the presidential race, and Gingrich would do his best work if he helped make it happen with the right candidate, whoever it is, but it's not Newt. I hope he graciously applies his efforts elsewhere to achieving the same goal: of helping limited government representation find its way into American government.
So they were prepared and let Hezbollah go?
Ronald Reagan would do the exact opposite of Barack Obama.
So no real response to post 9.
Haven’t read the archives. Will check into it though. My son is a 1/8 Marine and his wife is the granddaughter of a survivor. I will find out what I can.
I love Ronald Reagan as much as the next conservative. He is one of my heroes. But he was president 30 years ago. I love listening to his and Margaret Thatcher’s speeches. But I know when I do it that I am indulging in nostalgia. “What would Reagan do” is a bit of a fantasy. We have to figure out what we should do now, based on the people we have leading us now.
That’s good, winning the Cold War and removing the daily threat of total nuclear annihilation and the end of civilization and perhaps almost all of humanity, was a pretty big deal, at least at the time.
The wall came down 6 years later. I’m doing a lot of reading. I remember some of the news and watching some of the Iran-Contra hearings. No wonder my mother gave up on politics. Oh wait. Flash. My mother probably gave up when my brother died in Nam.
I hear you whining throughout the thread, but all I can make out is, that you are an unhappy person.
