KIEV, Ukraine — Russian forces in two armored columns captured a key southeastern coastal town near the Russian border Thursday after Ukrainian forces retreated in the face of superior firepower, a Ukrainian military spokesman said.
The two Russian columns, including tanks and armored fighting vehicles, entered the town of Novoazovsk on the Sea of Azov after a battle in which Ukrainian army positions came under fire from Grad rockets launched from Russian territory, according to the spokesman, Col. Andriy Lysenko.
“Our border servicemen and guardsmen retreated as they did not have heavy equipment,” Lysenko said in a statement.
Ukrainian authorities have denounced the latest fighting as a Russian invasion of their territory, intended to prop up pro-Moscow separatists who have been losing ground to Ukrainian forces and to open a “second front” in the southeastern corner of Ukraine.
Ukrainian officials said earlier that Ukrainian troops were battling combined Russian and separatist forces on a new southern front around Novoazovsk, about eight miles west of the Russian border. The Ukrainian military also said Russian troops were increasing surveillance from northern Crimea, the autonomous Ukrainian peninsula annexed by Moscow in March.

and the Russian apologists are still pretending there is no invasion. Amazing. Even the so-called “Prime Minister of the Donetsk People’s Republic” has admitted there are THOUSANDS of Russian regular army there.

You've known that this was coming, Lysenko. Shame on you for not having "heavy equipment" at the ready and destroying the invaders before they could get a foothold.
Remembering the fact that the Ukrainian Army is underfunded and neglected, it’s doubtful that it could put up much of a fight against the Russians even if it was in top form.

Civil Wars rarely result in outright victories. The American Civil War is the exception.
Ukraine - Western Ukraine, is simply outmatched and outgunned by the more populous east, which enjoys the support of Russia. It never stood a chance of regaining control over the entire country.
People are going to demand the army cut its losses and pull out of the Donbass. Those same West Ukie soldiers who won’t bleed there will defend their home turf.
Which Putin won’t take.

Kiev has been hiding the amount of casualties since this began, to keep up moral, but the lid is coming off of it now.
Families want to know where their kids are, that they haven’t heard from in weeks. They want to know why the kids of connected pols are exempt from conscription.
Kiev is claiming that only around 800-1,000 troops have been killed in the war, while the Rebels claimed in the Saturday News Conference that Kiev had actually taken 12,000 killed, 19,000 wounded, and 4,000 “Missing”, that they said most of whom are “assuredly dead”.
The truth is likely somewhere between them, but there is no doubt that Kiev has refused to acknowledge the casualties they are taking, and now it is beginning to cause real unrest.
This isn’t North Korea, they get the internet in Lvov, too.
If the Ukrainian government breaks down....do they risk the Russians moving in and taking over the entire country, or do the Poles decide to take action and move into Western Ukraine to stabilize things there?
Things could get real dicey real quickly.
The USA has no such agreement with the Ukraine.The memorandum (if that is what you are in reference to) signed when the Ukraine gave up its nukes is just that, a memorandum and is not a treaty or akin to a treaty in any way.
Most in the east don't want to leave Ukraine and don't want to be part of Russia.

That is complete crap.
There is no “civil war”. This is a 100% Russians engineered terrorist operation, which just evolved into a war of aggression against Ukraine. This is about as much a civil war as 9/11 was.
The US needs to give Ukraine massive military aide, there need to be mountains of dead Russian soldiers, and explosions going off all over Moscow and St. Petersburg. This a as clear cut case of good and evil as you will get in the 21st century, a people yearning to be free being devoured by power mad tyrant.

It would take some real breakdown of society for that to happen, I think. Russian money has subsidized Ukraine for two decades. IMO, Putin is more than happy to pawn off the corrupt and destitute Western Ukraine off on Europe. The real wealth is in the embattled areas of the East.

It is far more likely that the Hungarians would move into Ruthenia, than the Poles would do anything.
The Hungarians have been fairly vocal about the forced conscription of Ethnic Hungarians. There has been protests and some unrest in that area in recent weeks. I posted an article about it some weeks back.
Western Ukraine can survive. Its a homogeneous country that is 80-90% Ukrainian-speaking.
It can live without the Donbass. For that reason, it can count on its soldiers to defend it from a Russian invasion.
And for the Russians, its not a geopolitical prize.
