NYT ^ | 7/3/2014 | JEREMY ASHKENAS, ARCHIE TSE, DEREK WATKINS and KAREN YOURISH

The militant group called the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria seemed to surprise many American and Iraqi officials with the recent gains it made in its violent campaign to create a new religious state. But the victories achieved in the past few weeks were built on months of maneuvering along the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, which define a region known as the cradle of civilization.

Very interesting and well done.

And I don't say that about the Slimes very often.

The military situation on the ground has changed somewhat since this was created back in July, but it remains essential background.

Thanks for posting. This is a very informative piece. Something tells me that this part of the world is about to blow up in ways nobody had predicted, including our CIA.

And the wise men of Pharoah said to him, “This is the finger of God.” When people turn their backs on God, he can raise up a nation from a grain of sand and stomp them. Hide and watch, wait and see.

Barry's just doing the best he can. He couldn't get the Muslim Brotherhood set up in Egypt. Libya remains messy, but a jihadi playground on the Mediterranean ain't bad.

And he was pretty cool with ISIS, until they started raping mothers and children on mountain tops, and chopping off American heads on Youtube.

And it's not that Barry was that broken up about it (as he still managed to get in his 18 holes), or really wanted to do anything. Its that these sorts of displays cause other people to pay attention and say “Hey, these guys are really nasty. Maybe we should do something?” So Barry rolls his eyes, and throws up his hands in that petulant how-dare-you-bother-me sort of way he has, and tells ValJar to call the Joint Chiefs in for a chat.

Guess he made the right decision to get out of Iraq, eh? Not.

“And I don’t say that about the Slimes very often.”

I’ll read it when I’m more alert. Their maps can be great though. I remember one they had for elections, you could zoom in on the states and get all kinds of details about who ran and how they did.

It was really excellent, I remember thinking: there’s pretty much no way this could be improved upon.

Al Qaeda ... severed ties to ISIS in February and has condemned its tactics.

ISIS must be pretty bad to be unfriended by Al Qaeda.

What, Barack worry? it’s nothing like the Germans taking over the Sudetenland and Poland back in the irrelevant last century.

A Rogue State Along Two Rivers...

When I started to read the title, I thought it was going to be about Iowa.

“Very interesting and well done.”

Agree...and yes, it does feel weird to be saying that about the Times.
