kidnapped while reporting on the Syrian uprising.
His executioner - the man standing next to him in the picture at right - was speaking with a British accent. That's to say, he's one of thousands of citizens of western nations - British, American, European, Canadian and Australian - who've flocked to join the planet's coolest new gang and saw the heads off anyone who gets in their way: Christian, Yazedi, Kurd, Shia, Alawite, and, indeed, plenty of little schoolgirls in pretty pink dresses. As I said to John, more British Muslims are serving with ISIS than as soldiers of the Queen.

Mark Steyn ping.
Freepmail me, if you want on or off the Mark Steyn ping list.
Thanks for the ping Slings and Arrows.
Couldn't Steyn be using the term "subject" in a more informal sense? Sort of like calling America a "democracy", when strictly speaking it's a "republic".
Now changing gears a bit, what's your take on the upcoming Scottish independence vote? I've read recently that the "yes" folks are gaining momentum.
There. I fixed it.
Nationality SHOULD play a part here. If this scum has a British passport, Britain needs to revoke it. Just as we would - I hope - if a citizen of the USA went jihad on a British journalist.
People need to know that they lose their citizenship in upstanding countries when they go to fight jihad. Period.
I am voting NO.
And no, the yes campaign is actually losing momentum. The first TV debate was a disaster for the YES group, and its been going backwards ever since. I think as we get closer, the undecided voters and even some YES’ers are having second thoughts. If it aint broke, why fix it.
Besides, its peak earlier in the year still had it less than 50%. It seemed to peak about 45%. And that was some polls. In others about 40.
For the sake of diversity.........
That Salmond character ain’t no kind of John Adams, that’s for sure. Don’t even bother looking for a Thomas Jefferson or a John Hancock or a Patrick Henry in the ‘Yes’ crowd.
Unfortunately for Scottish independence, Salmond’s ‘No’ detractors in England successfully made the whole topic about him and the rest of the ‘Yes’ side seemed powerless to get out any kind of coherent message. They now appear that they didn’t even believe their own position or could have articulated to the people of Scotland what it actually is... Thereby proving that this is all really just a childish tantrum. That’s sad because they had a pretty decent list of genuine grievances against Westminster.
As an American, the Scottish bid for independence seemed like something I’d naturally support without looking.... Er, then I looked. Where was the widely-propagated ‘Common Sense’ tract? Where was the inspiring Declaration of Independence, detailing a list of grievances so callously ignored by Westminster, putting forth before mankind the subject of the matter in terms so plainly evident as to command their assent? Now they’re a half month out from the *vote* on Independence and they come to find out they only had about 40% of the popular vote for ‘Yes’ at best all this time? And it’s dropping?
Absolutely astonishing how ineptly this bid for Independence was. Scotland won’t live this down for centuries if they ultimately lose. Ultimately, they’re possibly even worse off if ‘Yes’ wins, but the humiliation if ‘No’ wins might prove unendurable. Just imagine the football chants next time England plays Scotland. This whole charade may stigmatize every Scot for a generation if ‘No’ wins: “Oh, were you one of the wee loony splitters?”.
Wow, Scotland. What the hell?
