What James Foley's murder says about the Islamic State

... The question for President Barack Obama and other Western leaders isn't whether to fight the Islamic State, but when. Should it be now, when the group is not yet entrenched in Iraq, and when Assad finally has begun to move against it in Syria? Or will it be once its fighters have established themselves in Iraq and Syria and move on to Jordan, as they moved on the Kurds? If they were to succeed in Jordan, why not the Gulf states, where they already recruit and solicit donations? In Iraq and beyond, the nightmare prospect is of an al-Qaida that controls petro-states and enjoys the funds, space and leisure to train jihadists from around the world.

The apparent tragic death of Foley should not be seen as a signal to step back in the belief that this will only be our fight if we make it so. Foley's killing just confirms what the Islamic State is and what it intends.

This has happened many times before so I don’t see what is so different today.

Read about the exploits of Tamerlane (he also wanted to create an Islamic State).

One of his calling cards was piling up decapitated heads to make mountains that could be seen from miles away.

I’d have to agree with you there. Persecution of the Christian minority in Mesopotamia predates the muslims even. They have been subjected to periodic slaughter, banned from government positions, forced to wear emblems and costumes to help segregate them, forced into living on scraps and divested of homes and properties, had their women taken captive and enslaved. Really there’s been no long term period where they’ve not been victimized and massacred. Of course, the rulers were also usually at each other’s throats and there was bloodshed to go around. However there’s something eerie about how this minority clung to the area despite the severity of the persecutions against it. Now, in many areas - they do not exist at all.
