Scio Township and the West Bay Exploration Company are preparing to wade into uncharted legal waters after the township’s Board of Trustees passed a six-month moratorium banning oil exploration activity and drilling.

The board passed the moratorium, along with a plan of action, by a vote of 7-0 at a special meeting Wednesday night at Scio Township Hall.

According to the resolution, “during the moratorium period, no drilling operation shall be allowed in the township.”

West Bay Exploration began drilling a 5,000-foot exploratory well at the corner of West Delhi Road and Miller Road this week and as of Wednesday morning had already reached a depth of about 175 feet below ground.

As part of its plan of action, the township board will take immediate action to notify West Bay that it will be held responsible for township ordinance violations.

This should be fun. The courts refused to grant the township an injunction to stop the drilling so the township passed an ordinance to make it illegal and now demands that they stop.

Scio township, filled with liberal pinheads originally from the peoples republic of Ann Arbor who moved to get out to the “country”. My first arrest as a Sheriffs Deputy was in Scio. Drunk driver trying to make it home from “Dexter Days”. Found three POUNDS of marijuana in his truck after we put him in the cruiser. His comment from the back of the cruiser? “stick a fork in me, I’m done”. LOL

My sil lives two blocks from that intersection, and she bought the green koolaid.

I overheard the wife talking to her, asked her a simple question as to why she thought it was wrong to drill. She was shocked to learn there was no reason, just her sister knew it was wrong.

Scio used to be reliably conservative until all the libs from Ann Arbor moved there, fleeing the consequences of their own policies. They then proceeded to get those same policies instituted where they moved to.

I grew up in the Hanover area when all the drilling was going on there and now I’m in the Napoleon area where drilling has been going on.

Both times the drilling has only resulted in temporary minor inconveniences like noise.

Its going to cost the people in the township a fair sum of money to lose this case. State law is pretty clear on this sort of thing. Municipalities can’t override state laws.

I see there is a “republican” trying to change the state law to make this sort of thing legal.

I lived just north of Scio Township for a few years. And you were a Deputy? We never met. ;)

Can you imagine you are a poor farmer & the oil company is real sure there is a lake of oil under your Scio Township land.

It's your land & mineral rights. But the gubmint could cause you to lose the land for failure to pay property taxes, which you could easily pay with oil royalties.

I'd be real mad. Wouldn't you?

I used to wade the Huron river fishing for rock bass in that area. Used to catch a lot of ‘em many moons ago.

If they stop drilling but leave the rig in place, damages will accrue at the rate of tens of thousands per day. And then the township will lose, have to pay and raise taxes on the libtards...

Scio Township is between A2 and Dexter. It is extremely leftist.

I hope my township (Northfield) doesn’t follow Scio.
