Out of an abundance of caution, the New Mexico Department of Health is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to perform tests to rule out Ebola in a 30-year-old woman who developed sore throat, headache, muscle aches and fever. The woman is at UNM Hospital in Albuquerque in stable condition.
The woman had been in Sierra Leone, Africa, and left there earlier this month.

What? Working to rule it out? What (the F...) about determining if it is an active case? And, we have people running around the states that just flew in from the center of the Ebola outbreak?
What am I missing here?
Awww crap. New Mexico. That’s getting close.
Bring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
Yeah. You missed the FReeper who insisted that any American anywhere in the world with a full blown, body fluids flyin’ case of Ebola had a gawd-given right to a private jet for transportation to an American hospital for treatment.
I just went to United Airlines website and tried to get a hypothetical flight to Lagos, Nigeria. Looks the flights are still available.
I think Delta may still be vectoring folks in, too. Not sure.
“What am I missing here?”
Nothing. We should have stopped entry from these countries MONTHS ago. And I still don’t think we have stopped it. But we should. Sorry, just stay there at this point.
Common testing protocols test negative until about 24 hours before the HF strikes the ebola victim. Incubation periods last generally 5-7 days, but have been documented between 2-22 days. I’d still quarantine the person for min 24 days.
Yep, Delta’s website shows flights available from Atlanta to Lagos, Nigeria.

Everyone should call these airlines and ask why they are still flying into/from Lagos, Sierra Leone, etc. Many other (country’s) airlines have stopped said flights.
People don’t realize what a true pandemic is.
My grandfather remembered the 1918 flu. He remember whole farms going fallow.
He was also just old enough to remember yellow fever, and a host of other bad things. Quarantine was common then.
Today, if someone crashed and bled out in the Mall of America, people would complain that they shut the stores down. We have no idea of what to do in a real threat.
That will, not might, hurt us.
My cousin’s little boy woke up today with all of those symptoms but he hadn’t been to Sierra Leone. He started back at school this week and has strep. Ugh. But you never know. He does live in the home town of the US Ebola doc.
I was at an elementary school this week and was talking to a child. I started walking toward her when she said, “DONT STEP THERE. there’s some throw up down there.” I couldn’t see it. It must’ve been already mopped up but still wet. The janitor was standing right there and said, “oh yeah. Walk around that area.” I had been talking to him and distracted him from his mission of keeping everyone away from the spot. Anywho, all I could think about was Ebola in schools after that. What a horror that would be!
Very interesting. Thanks for posting. Life/health/prepare BUMP!
She’s the first of many who flew back to the states. Bet we see a lot more “suspected” cases popping up in the coming days.
These airlines are after the money. Never mind that when someone starts vomiting and spewing poo in business class, they’ll have a mountain of law suits, bad publicity and will have to torch the plane.
Just like Brantly's kids were over there, there will be/are hundreds of missionary/volunteer's kids starting school now.
I'm thinking between now and as far out as Thanksgiving for the later ones coming back to wherever their home countries are to be the telling time.
