Apple Inc (AAPL.O) has begun keeping the personal data of some Chinese users on servers in mainland China, marking the first time the tech giant is storing user data on Chinese soil.
The storage of user data in China represents a departure from the policies of some technology companies, notably Google Inc (GOOGL.O), which has long refused to build data centers in China due to censorship and privacy concerns.
Apple said the move was part of an effort to improve the speed and reliability of its iCloud service, which lets users store pictures, e-mail and other data. Positioning data centers as close to customers as possible means faster service.

What about the Chinese hackers?
I’m surprised the cloud storage is not located in Iran or N.Korea.
But this is a good thing, because Apple cares about us. They obviously have the best reasons in the world to put American data on Chinese servers, and we ought not question their brilliant moves here.
Outside the judicial reach of Bammy and Holder?
What could possibly go wrong?
Don’t worry, data stored in China is safe because very few Chinese speak English. /S
I didn’t click the link either, but I did read the excerpt. If that’s too much, just read the first sentence. :)
Apple is really trying to drive me away.
They’re doing a good job.
The link is OK, it’s Reuters

Deceptive headline.
That’s my take on it.
In the abstract, I just don’t care because once your info is in the Could, wherever it is stored, it is out there. I certainly have nothing anyone is interested in, but my first reaction is ... I kinda like that. Makes it tough on the Feds to gather the info.
Everything is SO multinational now that I don’t know that it matters in the long run. Not saying that is a good thing, just not sure it matters.
I wasn’t afraid to click the link. Just lazy.
Exactly, which is why I don't use iCloud on any of my Apple devices. I don't care if they're not sync'd up together (which requires iCloud to do.)
Storing the data American servers just won’t do any more.
“Deceptive headline.”
Chinese users’ data on Chinese servers now, but with that ‘cloud’ thing, who knows what might go where in the future.
And you can't protect it from the government. People who use cloud storage need to realize that the government can get a warrant (or not) and access their data without the end user even being aware, and therefore they are unable to get legal representation to dispute the matter.

Word!
The reason the mainland Chinese authorities want the data servers in China is to read the personal data belonging to those in Hong Kong and and others, who they previously did not have access to.
It’s all about control and access to the activities of the people living in China and in it’s special districts, like Hong Kong.
The Chinese are not ignorant of this.. It is why Blackberry became very popular for a while because it’s e-mail servers were not accessible to the Chinese government.
Apple has now joined Yahoo and others on the proverbial “plank” where foolish compromises often lead to corporate suicide at some point.
Of course you have millions of lemmings who say..”I have nothing to hide, so why worry about phone security?”
To that I say..........har, har, har....
SO whats the fuss.
