“If Britain WAS saved from the Nazis, we did much of it ourselves.”
You idiots got pushed into the sea at Dunkirk. You hardly had what it took to fight the Germans.
Germany couldn’t invade England without air superiority (possibly even air supremecy). That meant destroying the RAF. The Battle of Britain demonstrated that the Luftwaffe couldnt do that. At least under the circumstances as they were.
Choking off sea lines of communication to Britain was another story entirely. The Kreigsmarine came damn close to doing that, and a major factor in preventing it was the transfer of those 50 WWI era Four Stacker destroyers from the USN, plus FDR’s violations of the Neutrality Act, plus US entry into the war.
Had that happened the UK would have been blockaded and starved into submission. And starvation doesn’t just include food, but materials (like fuel for the RAF) as well.
There’s a reason why, the evening of Pearl Harbor, Churchill wrote that he went to bed and “slept the sleep of the saved ... and the thankfull.”
