Hopefully people in power will note this and act accordingly, but I think the people will have to make more of this happen. Authority is hard to let go of.

“Nothing is being done to address demand.”

Really? How about draconian prison sentences and paramilitary raids on suspected drug users? Generations ago, we had the logic to abandon the War on Alcohol. What makes anyone think this war has gone any better?

This is precisely the wrong direction to go.

Mostly those two. The backlash against the government has helped recently as well. It’s tax free profits.

Less than half of their profits come from weed. They aren’t going anywhere.

If I were the President of Mexico I’d institute martial law and send paramilitary squads to eliminate cartel leaders with extreme prejudice.

ONDCP said this in 2008 =>

Of the $13.8 billion that Americans contributed to Mexican drug traffickers in 2004-05, about 62 percent, or $8.6 billion, comes from marijuana consumption.

These are the only figures available, because this was the first time the agency conducted a market analysis, a spokesman said.

Do you have updated figures?

2010 story

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=126978142

“Cannabis also accounts for almost half the cartels’ revenues, according to an estimate from the Mexican attorney general’s office.”

These 2 figures don’t necessarily contradict each other, there are 2 separate things, total cartel revenue across an unspecified amount of time versus the American contribution to same in 2004-05.

In any case, I don’t see them going out of business over liberalization of weed laws in the US, they have plenty of coke, meth, and heroin to sell. Losing half to 60% of their business would probably make they push those harder drugs all the more.

I’m not arguing for or against changes to US drug laws, just saying. Whatever we do we should do if it’s best for us, without taking Mexico into consideration.

Nor I - but taking away almost half of the cartels' revenue sounds like an excellent idea to me.
