Rutgers scholarship helps unauthorized immigrants attend college: Editorial

Giancarlo Tello, a 24-year-old political activist, is bright and articulate with a history of advanced classes and A’s.

But until very recently, college was out of reach for Tello. He came here from Peru when he was 6, and didn’t know until his sophomore year of high school that he was in the country illegally, when he found out he couldn’t get his driver’s permit.

Gov. Chris Christie signed a bill in December that was a half-fix for students like Tello, who has a waiver allowing him to remain in the country temporarily.

It permitted unauthorized immigrants to pay in-state tuition rates. The new law still doesn’t give them access to the financial aid.

Rutgers is one of the first public schools in the country to designate financial aid for students who entered the country illegally as children. We hope it is a trend-setter.

There are 68 million people in Latin America living in "extreme poverty". Our southern border is an open sieve. What is the limit on how many of these poor, illiterate, and sick people we will take in before we collapse? 10 million? 20 million? 50 million?

If this becomes too expensive for New Jersey, maybe Rick Perry can donate some Texas tax dollars to help.

I think the “in-state rate” includes a requirement that you’ve lived in the state for years. I don’t support it, but I don’t think it applies to people who jumped the fence a week (or even a year) ago.

In fairness to somebody like the subject of the story, he didn;t even know he was illegal; I doubt he would have tried to get his license without some kind of research if he even suspected it.
