Those around the world who are looking to the United States for support against intimidation, oppression or outright massacres have learned a tough lesson in the past few years: This U.S. president, despite his bold pronouncements and moral posturing, cannot be counted on.
In Syria, President Obama declared that the brutal dictator Bashar al-Assad must go. The U.S. ambassador in that country and other administration officials openly encouraged opposition groups campaigning against the Assad regime. Yet when it came time to organize and provide lethal assistance to moderate opposition groups to help defend them against Assads attacks, the president turned away.
According to some news reports, a trickle of weapons and training found its way to the Syrian opposition, but to no discernible effect. In the absence of a U.S.-led effort to empower moderates, other regional powers began to fund extremists. Now, responding to the slaughter on the ground and congressional initiative, the administration has endorsed more overt assistance, but with no useful details and no sense of urgency. It appears it could be way too little and way too late.

The problem is that Obama totally bailed on the moderates in Syria. Which is why IS exists today controlling parts of three different countries under the most brutal forms of Sharia law, led by a guy who considers himself the new caliph and is inspiring radicals around the world.
Had the moderates received decent arms and real-time intelligence in the beginning, Assad would be gone and IS would be either greatly weakened or outright gone as well.
We saw the same scenario play out in Ukraine. Thankfully the Ukranian government has gotten its act together enough to deal with the Russian attempts to break them into pieces on their own, no thanks to the US.
Are you confident that we would've backed the "right" group?
As I recall, McCain was meeting with and promoting a group that were eventually revealed to be aligned with al-Qaeda.
Further, bad as Assad has been, his regime has protected the Christian sects in the country while seemingly all of the various rebels have actively beheaded them.
There appears to be no good side in the Syrian situation. And, indeed, what national interest do we have in its outcome?
Try “nonexistent”. Just ask the Israelis.
The United States simply is not to be found anywhere on the planet since January 2009.
At one of the most crucial periods in global history with a Caliphate being established in the Middle East, allies under attack (Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt), Obama is NOWHERE TO BE FOUND except out on Hole 18.
Clint Eastwood was right when he showed that empty chair on the stage a few years back.
NOBODY TRUSTS OBAMA or his team and all allies are shaking their heads in disbelief as he snuggles up to the Muslim Brotherhood.
Appalling and disgraceful. Impeach him ASAP.
If we had backed moderates, everything we gave them could be in the hands of another group. Planned or not, the stalemate in Syria is probably beneficial.
Or, to put it another way, an enemy.
What is this, Corker’s attempt to shift right?
Why should he? This election cycle shows that Republican Senators can go as far as they want to the left, without paying for it. I predict GOP Senators will be a lot less coy about this sort of thing going forward.
hard to believe the Washington Post has FINALLY climbed out of obammys rear end to criticize the monkey.
No, you can rely on him to back satanallah at every turn.
They didn't.
It is an op-ed written by Sen Bob Corker.
I like what I’ve read about Bob Corker. He seems to be more principled than most (R) senators, voting his convictions rather than waiting for focus-group results to tell him what he thinks.
He won’t defend his own country against marauding invaders; why would he defend anybody else.
Obama is reliable. The world can always rely on him to act in favor of militant Islam and against the USA.
