the problem is the state law allowing Democrats to vote for either side in the primary
but then insisting that they must vote for the party in the general that they voted for in the primary.

That’s not a state law. Whether a primary is open or closed is at the discretion of the Party. However, the state law does prohibit voting in multiple primaries.
