My SIL and nieces are from India, and the notion of TP freaks them out.
I am to understand that much depends on what part of India one is from, what social caste one belongs to and their level of education.
I have a co-worker who is from India, from Southern India and she has only been here since the early 2000s. She is fastidiously clean. So much so to the point that she has complained after our company cut back on janitorial services from daily to 2 times a week, complaining the womans restroom was not being kept clean enough and complaining that one day the stalls were close to running out of TP but her big complaint was they had run out of those flushable seat liners. Ive been in the womens restroom at the same time as she and watched her hand washing very thorough and better than a number of native born American women Ive observed. She also went completely ballistic one day when she went to use one of the stalls and found that someone had left blood, presumably menstrual blood on the toilet seat saying how disgusting that was and how inexcusable it was.
She works with me in HR and is a benefits manager but has a degree in electrical engineering she got in India. She is extremely bright and while she has an Indian accent, is not difficult to understand as she speaks perfect English, more like the Queens English to be precise. And she is quite Americanized. She dresses not in traditional Indian clothing but in western clothing and dresses very well and smartly. In many ways shes the typical American soccer mom, freaking out about things like her teenage daughter learning to drive and getting ready to go off to college next year.
I recall not long ago we had some really severe thunderstorms and she was left without power for two days and didnt come to work those two days because she was unable to take a hot shower and blow dry her hair.
