The deadly Ebola virus is moving faster than efforts to control it, the World Health Organization says. The warning came at the launch of a $100 million response plan to the epidemic.
The leaders of the three countries hardest hit by the recent Ebola epidemic - Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia - met on Friday in the Guinean capital, Conakry, along with the head of the World Health Organization, Dr Margaret Chan. Also at the meeting was the President of Ivory Coast.
The group came together to launch a $100 million (74.5 million euro) response plan to counter the rapidly spreading virus. The largest-ever recorded outbreak of Ebola has killed at least 729 people since the beginning of the year, including a number of doctors and other health workers.
The leaders discussed the deployment of hundreds of medical personnel to help overstretched workers and facilities, as well as better prevention methods - including better detection of cases and improved border surveillance.

A research hospital has the means to keep an eye on a case that a field hospital wouldn’t. In the longer term yes it would make sense to build an Ebola study center in Africa.
Oh no! North Korea may be the only safe place left soon
maybe not since they're letting basketball stars in. Oh well, enjoy the good life while we can, things are getting series.
Good idea, but funds might be misappropriated or the place wouldn’t be up to standards.
Which never happens in North America.
OK...729 people have died since the beginning of the year according to this article. That is about 91-92 people per month. In three countries. In Africa where there are very poor conditions.
I’m sorry...but I don’t think I’ll go into the “sky is falling mode”.
The media has a new fear every month or so to keep us all on our toes.
Most of the cases were in isolated areas. Now the cases have jumped to Lagos - population 20 mil. The numbers reported by WHO are not accurate. Nigeria is tracking 30,000 potential exposures.
We will probably know for sure how bad it is (or not) in the next two weeks.
or Central
The next two weeks or so may show more and I could totally regret my lack of alarm.
i wonder how it would do in the desert. I would think it couldn’t survive as well in that climate. I’m heading for the Mojave if thing get out of hand.
Oh wait Hussein already did that!
Better start reading Matthew and Revelations again...........
I know, it reminds me of the I Legend movie w/Will Smith or something. They’ve found that if they transfuse blood from those who’ve overcome the disease to those who have it, it is effective in curing it. (I read that somewhere, so not sure if it’s true but it makes sense)
When have you ever heard of a government allowing a contagious deadly disease into its country, and for what purpose?
They are not bringing these two doctors home to treat them, they are happy to have two live subjects to experiment on.
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If the virus can take hold in America, then Odumbo will have the justification he needs to declare martial law.
Not sure what the threshold will be. 5 cases, 25, 500?
This is why the good doctor was allowed to return here.
Atlanta. The epicenter of Obama’s base.
That’s ok...My early warning systems are going off enough to compensate for your indifference...
When people are not kept hydrated, they die. That is the treatment. Hospitalization is more for containment and hydration.
There is no underlying issue. It is a very simple disease.
Being concerned is smart. But educate yourself. Just don’t start spreading BS rumors around just because your scared.
