America, the land of the free, the home of the brave, is in a social-media panic because Dr. Kent Brantly, the 33-year-old Indiana physician who contracted Ebola while battling it in Liberia, is coming home as he struggles to hang onto life. This fear-laden response to a true American hero is out of touch with the fundamental principles of this country.
The Internet is afire with protest, and the misleading headlines stating that Ebola is being brought to the U.S. spread more fear but no understanding or empathy.
Brantly himself makes me proud to be both an American and a physician, and reminds me of the fearless battle against HIV/AIDS in the 1980s, when we took personal risks to care for the sick and the dying. A family friend describes him as caring more for others than for himself. This kind of altruism and courage is becoming rare these days, among physicians and society in general, but it is just as important now as it was in the 1980s, if not more so.

Dr Siegals likely an obama zombie...
There’s a lot, a real lot of reasons to fear ebola and go into panic mode. Ebola is a killer, despite a very few who survive. It is a horrible illness, and to bring it into the US is beyond irresponsible. Should any sort of outbreak occur in the US, President 0bama’s fear of impeachment will become the least of his worries!!!!!
“Obama Inc will manipulate the panic in order to gain more control. Even if there is no leak of infection, or outbreak, all one of Obamas lackeys has to do is imply that the Ebola virus is spreading in the US,,,and the propaganda media will eat it up, even if NOT true and we will never know the truth.”
Wow! If ever there was the opportunity for a truly evil regime to remove ‘undesirables’ from the populace, this would be the perfect means to go about it! Announce that this incredibly contagious virus with horrifying effects is on the loose, that anybody in their right mind would avoid at all costs. Set up 20 ‘quarantine centers’ around the country staffed by your most loyal and equally evil followers. All the regime would need to do is go around collecting the undesirables in some sort of ‘ambulance’ claiming to family and neighbors that the individual had been in a place where they were exposed, and needed to be quarantined for the safety of the rest of the country. Transport said individuals to one of the 20 facilities where they are placed in a level 4 lab never to be seen again. Nobody could even investigate. No bodies because they must be cremated.
I have a great imagination...
No. You don’t have a great imagination. It all happened before in Germany.
“I have a great imagination...”
You sure do!
It's not an irrational fear, it's a realistic concern and conviction.
three months aint many weeks...
The problem is that Ebola at this time cannot be cured via traditional medicine. There is no anti virus. The only way to control this is quarantine. It will eventually come down to shut down borders and even air transport.
The idea of reducing global population to 500m w Ebola would be a catrastrophic event. This disease does not distinguish between race, creed, or color. It must have hosts to stay alive.
Watch what happens when this explodes in major African cities.
its ikely going to get a bit uglier before its over.
Time to build a wall around Emery University Hospital?
Foolish to transport a deadly virus with no cure to the United States, why if this thing got out millions of ordinary citizens would die leaving all that property to the state.
Oh the huge matinee!
Physicians put their lives on the line everyday with far less sexy viruses than ebola, but equally as deadly. We take care of people. What happened to the days of going to the moon? Curing disease? What happened to American can do spirit? All of you who are lamenting this physician returning do not deserve to live in the home of the brave.
We used to be a great society, we revered men who created the best economy, wrote great work of literature and philosophy, cured disease and celebrated freedom. If you turn away from this America, do NOT come crying to me when the government turns away from you. How DARE you?
Being afraid and running is as un-American as communism. I would hope that the great scientists and physicians at the CDC would take care of me if I contracted a disease in the practice of medicine and the very humanitarianism I too an oath to practice.
And before i get called names and all the rest, I AM A CRITICAL CARE physician, so if this bastard hits us, I will be taking care of these people.
NO VIRUS has a cure
Great you are a critical physician. Shame ON YOU for lecturing others without know exactly how Brantley contracted the virus. Do you have an answer to that? Do you?
Who the hell do you think YOU are that everyone should accept such an unprecendented level of risk without raising any concerns.
You tell us exactly how you know 100% that the ebola will be contained and back it up. Then you tell us how exactly Brantley contracted it. THEN, maybe, you’ll be on to something. You chose what you do. You chose your level of exposure. How dare you tell anyone else they aren’t allowed to do the same.
Since the Republicans have taken actual action against Obama, I bet that a much more aggressive breed of Republicans are going to get elected in and they’ll be running the real show while Obama gets put in his place. Then things will be more effectively dealt with, decisively this time around.
Obama now has no more leverage and has no chance to push back using even the race card. He himself completely destroyed it.
Ah, with all due respect Dr, granted it was probably an auto-correct error, but you wrote “went to try and do EXACTLY what physicians are supposed to do, gel the sick.” There is a strong irony there that the VIRUS does just that: turns the patients organs into ‘gel’. Such is why perhaps it would be just a wee bit more prudent to send a team and all the necessary supplies to the region where the virus is loose rather than have 100% confidence no mistakes will be made in bringing the virus here.
I have great respect for doctors and staff who risk their lives dealing with these kinds of things, but a line must be drawn at risking other people’s lives.
and yet it hasn’t weakened in all these decades....
It works with this government.
