That reminds me of one of my few disagreements with the late President Reagan. Every time he would mention sharing Star Wars technology with the Soviets my blood would boil. Great President but even Reagan had a few quirks

I have been led to believe that reagan did not believe Star Wars technology was in fact possible in the short run. His genius was convincing Russia to ramp up its military beyond its ability to maintain its economy. He bankrupted them with cold war tactics. Sort of a Clyde/Piven strategy. This being the case why would it not make sense to overcome MAD with MAP? The result would be the same. Russia would be bankrupt.

His theory, rightly or wrongly, was that if we both had it, it would make ballistic missiles obsolete.

To be honest, there wasn’t any real technology behind Star Wars.
