Looks more like a Bichon Frisé than a poodle; although that breed is a cross between the water spaniel and the standard poodle to begin with.

I think you're right, it's a BF. What might be surprising to a lot of folks who are mostly familiar with the smaller versions of the poodle, Standard poodles are very smart (too smart to hang out with the likes of an Obama) and make very good hunting dogs.
