First Amendment: Government's assault on religious liberty has hit a new low as the IRS settles with atheists by promising to monitor sermons for mentions of the right to life and traditional marriage.
A lawsuit filed by the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) asserted that the Internal Revenue Service ignored complaints about churches' violating their tax-exempt status by routinely promoting political issues, legislation and candidates from the pulpit.
The FFRF has temporarily withdrawn its suit in return for the IRS's agreement to monitor sermons and homilies for proscribed speech that the foundation believes includes things like condemnation of gay marriage and criticism of ObamaCare for its contraceptive mandate.
The irony of this agreement is that it's being enforced by the same Tax Exempt and Government Entities Division of the IRS that was once headed by Lois "Fifth Amendment" Lerner and that openly targeted Tea Party and other conservative groups.
Among the questions that the IRS asked of those targeted groups was the content of their prayers.
Those who objected to the monitoring of what is said and done in mosques for signs of terrorist activity have no problem with this one, though monitoring what's said in houses of worship is a clear violation of the First Amendment. Can you say "chilling effect"?

So let them listen.
Maybe hearing all that preaching will get them saved.
Sounds like the IRS is still hip-deep in conservatism and religiosity suppression through "other means".
If they are going to monitor churches, they need to monitor ALL churches, including those run by the likes of Rev. Wright. We will see if the IRS pulls his tax exempt status.
Well, being Catholic, we hear about normal marriage and the right to life every week. I guess we are political criminals. I am happy to be among the partisans.
Yikes, that is hard on the eyes.
Hopefully this pathetic lawsuit will come back to bite her and those RATS in the butt.
Wanna shut the atheists down?
Help us get the FairTax passed!
Oh, by the way, FairTax also shuts down the IRS!
501c3 status is a governmental establishment of religion, which is a violation of the explicit words of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.
I know that, EV, but rather than fighting that battle, I choose to support FairTax, which will restore the First Amendment to non-profits.
It was lost a long time ago. When, I don't know, but certainly long before I was born.
Bump
Thanks!
Since the day Obama stood on the Capitol steps and swore before God and man to protect and obey the Constitution of the United States.
You know, that old scrap of yellowed paper that no president before or since Reagan has ever taken time to read.
And I'm a Baptist who's happy to stand beside you.
If our Constitutionally guaranteed freedom of religion is lost, and IMHO it will eventually come to that, the United States we love and cherish will fade away into history just as every other great nation through out history that defied God's laws has. No entity on earth, neither man nor nation, can spit in God's eye and continue to live and prosper for very long, and the US is rapidly nearing the limit that He will tolerate.
