Actually I believe that scientists and anthropologists are backing away from that.

Not as far as I am aware. The latest thinking is that migrants came up from Africa and intermingled with the Neanderthals of Europe, so that anyone whose recent ancestors originated outside of Africa has about 5% Neanderthal genes. By recent, I mean within the last few thousand years.
However, the source of humanity (Homo sapiens) is still considered to be Africa.
