One problem, which I do not take credit for thinking of but read somewhere, is that you cannot have a ceasefire in and of itself. Israel has mobilized its army and “invaded” Gaza. Troops cannot sit and hold positions, when they do that they are just sitting ducks for mortar attacks and sniper fire among others. Troops need to move, they need to advance.
So asking for a cease-fire is not even a practical request. Obama is asking for Israel to withdraw its troops from Gaza - something they could do, but probably should not do having gone this far they should destroy more tunnels and/or take Gaza city.
Another problem that is rarely mentioned is that Hamas is not a signatory to the Geneva Accords. Their soldiers are irregular militia and do not wear uniforms or insignia. So when their fighters are killed either shot in a gun fight, bombed in the act of launching a rocket, or hit by a tank moving supplies to support other fighters Hamas claims them as “civilian deaths” when they are in fact fighters engaged in combat. Not many of the new media reports on this.
War is aweful. There was no reason for Hamas to start this except to gain leverage and unfortunately Kerry and Obama seem hell bent on caving into their demands. Basically, Hamas sacrificed 1000+ lives and lots of infrastructure just to get a seat at the table, to ask for $50 billion in reconstruction aid, a sea port, free transport of goods etc etc. Something they could have had through peace, ironically enough. But they get to have their cake and eat it too this way. Get all they want, and still get to shoot at and kill Jews and Israelis.
