WASHINGTON (JTA) President Obama told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu he wants an immediate, unconditional humanitarian cease-fire in the war with Gaza, based on a process Israel has made clear it opposes.
The statement Sunday afternoon from the White House describing a phone call between the two leaders referred to cease-fire talks led in recent days by Secretary of State John Kerry which culminated in a proposal rejected unanimously on Friday by Israels security Cabinet.
Building on Secretary Kerrys efforts, the president made clear the strategic imperative of instituting an immediate, unconditional humanitarian cease-fire that ends hostilities now and leads to a permanent cessation of hostilities based on the November 2012 ceasefire agreement, the statement said.
Israeli leaders rejected Kerrys proposal in part because it envisions talks with Hamas toward ends that Israel believes would reward a group it rejects as illegitimate, including opening borders.
Additionally, Israel wants any cease-fire to allow Israeli troops to continue tracking and destroying tunnels from the Gaza Strip into Israel, which Israel says were in place to facilitate a massive terrorist attack on Israeli communities.
Obama in his statement addressed some of the Israeli concerns, which were not made explicit in drafts of Kerrys proposal leaked to media over the weekend.
The president underscored the United States strong condemnation of Hamas rocket and tunnel attacks against Israel and reaffirmed Israels right to defend itself, the statement said. The president also reiterated the United States serious and growing concern about the rising number of Palestinian civilian deaths and the loss of Israeli lives, as well as the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza.
The statement from Obama also nodded to another Israeli demand, that Gaza be demilitarized, although it suggested this was a long-term goal.
The President stressed the U.S. view that, ultimately, any lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict must ensure the disarmament of terrorist groups and the demilitarization of Gaza, it said.
So far the conflict launched July 8 has killed more than 1,020 Palestinians, most of them civilians, and 43 Israeli soldiers and three civilians in Israel.
That is stupid.
> he wants an immediate, unconditional humanitarian cease-fire in the war with Gaza... referred to cease-fire [demands] by [Hamas, Qatar, and their camp follower] Secretary of State John Kerry which culminated in a proposal rejected unanimously on Friday by Israels security Cabinet.
It’s interesting that this leak actually undermines the position and policy of Zero and his gangsters. Perhaps he didn’t think it would have that effect when he leaked it. Thanks SJackson.
I don’t see from the article what “0” said when he called Hamas. Surely he DID call Hamas, too, didn’t he? Surely he would understand that calling only Bibi would imply that the Israelis are solely responsible for there not being even a temporary truce, and he would call Hamas to ensure US policy is even handed. Or, if he wants to be real, he would surely call only Hamas since events are showing they are the sole impediments to a cease fire.
Barry didn’t care what was going on as long as the rockets were flying one way. Now that his Muzzie buddies are getting their a$$es handed to them its a humanitarian crisis.
I hope Bibi won't do that. While all decent Secret Service agents would applaud the sentiment, there might be one who would put what he sees as his duty ahead of the good of both the United States and Israel. I would hate to see Bibi on the wrong side of an armed Secret Service agent - those guys are skilled.
Bibi's reaction, as performed by Ray Liotta
He just wants to get outta town for his lil $multi-million vacay.
If’n I was Netanyahu, I would tell Obama “Want in one hand, S#!t in the other...see which one fills up first.”
The president also reiterated the United States serious and growing concern about the rising number of Palestinian civilian deaths and the loss of Israeli lives, as well as the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza....Who he talkin’ about? I ain’t got no growing concern about Hamas getting killed. I don’t think there has been VERY many Palestinians civilians killed.
BIbi tells Obama - eliminating Hamas is humanitarian.
Barry probably already knows.
Did Bambi send the same message to HAMAS?
Tell him to go pound sand!

--- This is why we can't win elections - NO CONSISTENT MESSAGE !
;-)
If Obama says something, it must be heeded. He is so influential with his red lines and demands. Only problem is that no one is listening.
Shortly after Obama told Bibi to use the garbage can door. Obama went to watch tv instead of speaking with his guest Bibi at dinner. And then there was the spectacle of Obama actually telling Bibi to give away more of Israel to leave her behind the “ auschwitz borders” of a half century ago. And Obama keeps sending American money and arms to islamoNazi terrorists like Hamas/ Muslim brothers / the ones who crucify Christians in Iraq and Syria now and etc. And etc. And remember Obama overthrew Egypt and Libya to install islamoNazi thugs into power Etc. And Obama has even paid for islamics to come to USA and he’s keeping our borders unguarded so far more can sneak in. I think most Americans have connected the dots by now and figured out who Obama works for. Besides, Obmaa has told us how there’s nothing more beautiful than the Muslim call to prayer and remember his brother is an islamoNazi terrorist/ fundraiser too.
I assume he made the same demands of the Palestinians who started it, right? Right?
Yeah, thought so.
Suuure, Israel is supposed to stop while hussein is writing another check to Hamas.
“Unconditional ceasefires” is a new way of saying “surrender”.
