Wichita police say a 10-month-old baby was left alone in a hot car for two to two and a half hours Thursday afternoon. The girl was found dead at around 6:40 pm in the 1500 block of S. Topeka.
Police say the girl's 29-year-old foster father picked her up from a babysitter at around 4:00 in the afternoon. They returned to the home along with a five-year-old child. Police say, somehow, the child was left behind in the car as the 29-year-old and the 5-year-old went inside.
The foster father's partner, a 26-year-old man who is also a foster parent, was in the backyard when they came home and didn't realize the young girl was not inside.
Police say the two were watching TV when they realized the girl was not in the house. They found the girl unresponsive, brought her inside and called 911.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the home and pronounced the girl dead.
Police took both men in for questioning, then arrested the 29-year-old on one count of Aggravated Child Endangerment. Police expect to present their case to the District Attorney's Office next week.
Police say the girl has lived with the foster parents since last fall, and they were in the process of adopting her. They adopted five and seven year old children. Those two were taken into police protective custody.
Three other foster children live in the home, they are staying with other family members.
Police do not know how hot it was in the car when the girl was found.
Police are tracking down family members before releasing any names.
Good thing they took the other kids into "protective custody." /sarc
The foster father’s partner, a 26-year-old man who is also a foster parent, was in the backyard when they came home and didn’t realize the young girl was not inside.
Do they mean the foster father has a homosexual partner???
What is up with all these stories over the last few weeks of children dying in hot vehicles? Are the parents really that stupid?
I have raised a 10 month old. The silence is hard to ignore. They’re never silent except when sleeping.
Yes, that was the way I was reading it. Two gay men with multiple children and/or foster children living with them. What could go wrong?
Sounds like it to me.
This is a bit difficult to understand.
I guess there are two foster parents, both men. Must be a couple. But the writing is crappy. Too much change the World not enough Who, What, When, Where, How and Why in J-School anymore.
The tragedy is that this happens. It has happened for years. It is almost always unintentional. I fear we just hear more about it today than we have in the past.
This is the new hobby horse of the media.
Breeding future homosexuals. The New America of Obamaland
They should start imprisoning people who “forget” that their child is in the car. Even those for whom it is a lapse in memory. Hard time for each child’s death.
“The foster fathers partner, a 26-year-old man who is also a foster parent, was in the backyard when they came home and didnt realize the young girl was not inside.”
Mentally ill people shouldn’t “play parent”; these people are insane (and were deemed so by the medical field until that was changed for purely political reasons decades ago).
Right. Because this sort of thing is intentional.
People are just way too busy. They get busy an forge about the fact that they have the kid in the back seat.
Not sure if that explains it ,just throwing it out there.
People need to get the message that at a minimum they are going to do significant jail time if they allow this to happen, no matter what the excuse. Except for the truly stupid and drink/drug-addled, this type of negligence would probably come to an end quickly once adults realize they will face serious repercussions.
Someone really needs to comes up with some sort of invention, that triggers an alarm if the baby is still in his/her car seat
“What is up with all these stories over the last few weeks of children dying in hot vehicles? Are the parents really that stupid?”
I can think of at least two answers:
1. Things like this simply went unreported in the past.
2. People really are now that stupid.
I am now old, have lived many years including pre-air conditioned times in a hot climate, and have no relatives, friends or neighbors who had such lapses.
I conclude that taken as a whole, Americans are trending down. Common sense is in decline.
Of course my father was born in the same cabin as his mother, not hospitals like my siblings and my wife’s siblings.
We have become far to tolerant of stupidity. Punish it more.
I agree! I watch JEOPARDY every day. The questions are getting easier every year, because we are all being dumbed down
This sort of thing happens. You can forget that you have your child with you when you go to the store. You can assume your spouse grabbed the kid out of the car when you got home.
These cases are rarely intentional and the amount of anguish that the perpetrator feels must be extreme. Locking them up will solve nothing. Parenting classes will solve nothing. Accidents happen, people are fallible.
