One in 5,000 males is born with the disorder; females can be affected, but to a lesser degree. About 40 percent of cases of autism are associated with Fragile X syndrome. Given that the current rate of autism diagnosis is 1 in 68, these numbers don't add up. Even if all of the "autism spectrum disorders" are discounted, the numbers still don't add up. If 40% of autistic children have fragile X, and 1 in 68 children are diagnosed with autism, then the rate of diagnosis of autistic children with fragile X would be 1 in 170. Someone should have proofread the article more carefully prior to publication.
Unfortunately, the original journal article is behind a paywall, so I cannot access it. I doubt we have this journal subscribed at work, either. I would love to read what it actually says.
