Sutter County is now an official supporter of the movement to secede from California and create a new state called Jefferson.
The Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted a resolution on Tuesday supporting a declaration and petition to the Legislature to redress a lack of representation and for the possible formation of a new, separate state.
The resolution also reserved the right to place the issue to a vote of Sutter County citizens at a future election.
As in past supervisor meetings when the issue was on the agenda, the supervisor's chamber was packed with State of Jefferson supporters, many of whom addressed the board and expressed the same sentiment that the rural areas of California are under-represented by a Legislature stocked with politicians from urban areas.
The resolution cites abuses of Sutter County by the state, including the imposition of certain taxes and fees, the state's disregard of payment-in-lieu-of-taxes funds owed to many rural counties, excessive environmental regulation that "has crippled our industry, delayed important public projects and greatly increased costs," and disregard of the county's historic water rights, among others.

FReepmail me if you want to be added or removed from the The State of Jefferson ping list.
Good news!
Indeed. Great turnout. Especially considering the meeting took place at 3:00 in the afternoon on a work day.
Please Please Please Yes. I’m moving there to finally be free from the plague called California.
You got it.
Rediculous waste of time.
That's the beautiful part of the State of Jefferson movement. If you don't think the effort is worthwhile, you are not obligated to participate.
Forgive my cell phone posting errors. Any way you spell it, it has as much chance of happening as I do of becoming Pope and I’m not Catholic.
I hope I will still be able to sell my house in Mexifornia...er, I mean West California, because I Will definitely move to Jefferson. I am not holding my breath, but I can dream, can’t I?
Be that as it may. It is our time to do with as we please. If we want to waste it, what difference does that make to you?
Now, go away and don't darken this thread again or I shall taunt you a second time.
You Southern Californians are the reason we want our own state. Can you blame us for trying to get away from you?
Just be aware of the dream squashers. Ignore them. They're like skunks who have no control of their stink glands. They like to spray their stink everywhere they go. They must like the smell.
It makes no difference to me at all. I just stated a fact.
You should probably get a new cell phone. The one you have is dumb.
So you think the State Legislature and Congress will approve carving up California into smaller states? As I posted earlier that’s as likely as me becoming Pope.
Seriesly, dude (or dude-ette) you need a new cell phone.
Look. If a guy who accomplished absolutely nothing the first 45 years or so of his life can get elected President of the most powerful country on the planet, I'm not going to risk losing a penny on whether or not you might become Pope one day.
When did I write anything about six states? I wrote “states”- two or more. Even my lousy California schooling taught me that creating a State of Jefferson would carve up the state into smaller parts.
Okay. You got me. Now we’re even.
