CRASS: Dem Rep. Crisanta Duran Caught Chanting “Death to CO GOP”

First, Howard Dean wanted to ship all Republicans to the Ukraine or Russia. Now, unions and at least one elected official are calling for the GOP’s death. As The Colorado Statesman reports, state Rep. Crisanta Duran marched with a Latino group and the Service Employees International Union as they chanted “Death to the Colorado GOP.”

At a rally on Tuesday in downtown Denver led by the Service Employees International Union, or SEIU, Latino leaders and community groups held a mock funeral procession in which they declared, “Death to the Colorado GOP for killing immigration reform.”

“It is very frustrating that they have not been part of the solution to see comprehensive immigration reform, to actually get it done,” said Duran. [the Peak’s emphasis]

So you think what is popular is always right?

Nope, I believe that whatever is right, is right. In this case, I consider the marijuana question to be morally neutral (as long as we are referring to adults, obviously - it would be immoral to peddle this stuff to kids), just as I consider the legalization of alcohol to be morally neutral. It may be a bad lifestyle choice to indulge in such things, but it is not, in of itself, immoral. What IS immoral is the heavy-handed police-state response to the illegality of the drug. Immoral and unconstitutional. A guy getting high in his living room after work is not immoral, though it may be illegal. A SWAT team kicking that guy's door in at 3am, shooting his dog, pistol-whipping his wife and kids and seizing his assets without trial IS IMMORAL , though it is considered "legal" (my copy of the US Constitution suggests otherwise).

An unfortunate aspect of "conservative" politicians is that they will go for the conservative populist notions, even when those notions are in violation of conservative principles. So, for example, a "conservative" politician running for office will be aware that "law and order" is a red-meat issue for conservatives, and will then offer full support for the "War on Drugs" as a mindless form of populism without ever asking if the War on Drugs, as it is currently executed, even falls within a conservative worldview. Remember that drugs of any kind were not illegal at the time of this country's founding, nor were they illegal for most of the country's history. And, in fact, many of the Founders partook of one drug or another (alcohol, opium, laudanum, marijuana, etc.) and would have been appalled that a "free" man could be thrown in jail for what he chooses to ingest in his own home. The concept of government regulating the personal choices of its citizens is not a conservative one - it is a left-wing one which modern conservatives have embraced as their own.

I think it was PJ O'rourke who quipped that it was the job of liberals to screw things up and the job of conservatives to prevent those mistakes from being fixed. Quite astute, I'd say.
