On a busy street in central Moscow, a well-dressed man stands yelling at the crowd: "Don't you understand? There will be a war!"
All around him, people walk by, wholly uninterested. It's a hot summer's day, they're enjoying the sun.
Save for a couple of tourists taking pictures, no-one pays much attention at all.
The friend of a friend who saw this, posted the news on Facebook.
Someone responded with a cartoon of Homer Simpson holding a sign that says "The End is Near".
There are people here who are genuinely concerned about the direction Russia is heading under Vladimir Putin, but they are very much in the minority.
Anyone watching Russian state TV (from which, according to a Levada Centre poll, an estimated 94% of population get their news) would have little idea of the weight of the international outrage building against their leader and the threat of serious sanctions to come.
Instead, they will be treated to a rundown of the "10 questions Ukraine's government must answer", and clips of Russia's foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, insisting that any accusation of Russian involvement is "unfounded" and that he "hasn't heard anything truthful from Kiev for months".
This will not surprise viewers who have spent those months listening to condemnation of the "junta" in Kiev, which they have regularly been told is controlled by fascists.
The morning after the crash, some Russian newspapers didn't even cover it.
The official state newspaper, Rossiskaya Gazeta, decided the loss of 298 lives was not its top story, leading instead with an "exclusive investigation" into what Russians eat and drink, the fate of flight MH17 relegated to the bottom of the page.

Actually the bombing campaign was such a failure it had to be halted. Seems like when you employ multiple countries speaking multiple languages it is a bit difficult to accurately identify targets. NATO was forced to arm terrorists on the ground to finally remove Ghadaffi. And Benghazi was the result.
Sorry, you missed it. I was referring to the people that posted on that thread...not myself.
There are a few that just fall all over themselves when they meet a strong man type, almost like a cult reaction, perhaps it is Putin’s determined homoerotic campaign where he poses both shirtless and in various costumes, as the hero of all kinds of posed photos from space to hunting and horse riding, and heroism, etc.
When you see a large collection of them and the absurdity of them, it isn’t difficult to know what kind of men he was trying to win to devote themselves to him, very impressionable men, hungry for a man to follow.
Not about us. It is about Putin. He wont respect any Democrat President. He will play a GOP-E President. He will respect a Reagan type President.
Why is it that every time since Carter that we have had a Democrat in the White House, we end up on verge of a World War with Russia (Clinton - Kosovo, Obama - Ukraine). It is because the Russians wont back down when they know their opponent will. Simple as that. What you want right now is suicidal. But I am sure we will soon hear about mass graves in Ukraine and see images of concentration-like camps.
That’s totally false. We didn’t arm anyone in Libya. If we hadn’t bombed Kadaffy’s forces he’d still be in power today.
Nobody is on the verge of world war with Russia, where do you get these crazy ideas?
You think the world is on the verge of WWIII?
You must have gone nuts during the mid 1980s when we actually were, BEFORE the Russian military empire collapsed.
What is it that you think that Putin wants to have Russia erased in a nuclear holocaust for? What is so important that he wants to launch nuclear weapons?
What on earth are you talking about?
What is it you think I want that is suicidal? Putin to be held responsible by the world for his part is shooting down a civilian airliner? That is not going to cause WW3, not by a long shot. But it may result in the kind of international sanctions that force Putin to stop supporting "separatists" with heavy weapons, training, intelligence, etc, who are attempting to destabilize the Ukraine (because without his boot on the Ukraine, Putin's dream of reassembling some part of the Soviet empire is impossible).
Yup, it seems so. I can maybe see why that might be popular in Russia since they have no real history of democratic governance and have gravitated to the "strong man" type in the past. Perhaps it is all they really know and feels reassuring to them - a macho man type to restore their national pride. It is kinda amusing that Putin has this publicly strong stance against the homo agenda, yet is featured in endless photos that look like he's trying to appeal to the Village People.
For educated American conservatives to fall for this sort of thing is just bizarre.
Here is a man that looks uncomfortable on a horse, and a world leader that for some reason is shirtless, and if you notice, all of his horse pictures look like he is walking a horse from the kiddie stable.
We came. We saw. He Died. Without arms ?
If you think Obama is going fire nukes on Russia for any reason, you clearly do not understand our predicament. And the Ukraine gave all its nukes up. Russia has more to fear from Israeli nukes then it does from American nukes. That is how bad our predicament is right now.
We will talk about this again when Obama is removed from office. Until then you have no clue and no chance.
You are very sick people. Suggest professional care at this point. Just as bad as the Putin Lovers who were booted off many years ago. To go back to blaming closet Putin homos on FreeRepublic for your problems. That is really sad.
Sorry, but you are nuts, we are not on the verge of WWIII, Putin is not as insane as you are, and is not wanting for Russia to disappear in nuclear dust.
Russia is weak and and is just trying to get away with what it can, until someone slaps his hand.
This is your own nutty obsession, in your own head.
At this point you are just posting gibberish.
Well, we can go to Pravda for coverage critical of our clowns and tyrants, and Russians can go to CNN for non-stop coverage of this debacle.
