July 20, 2014 Ukraine Rebels Claim To Have Black Boxes, Have Moved Bodies To Trains

DONETSK, Ukraine - Rebels have recovered the black boxes from downed Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 and will hand them over to the International Civil Aviation Organization, a rebel leader said Sunday.

This still, taken from a Reuters video shot Friday, July 18, apparently shows emergency workers locating one of the black boxes. REUTERS Alexander Borodai also said the bodies recovered from the crash site in eastern Ukraine would remain in refrigerated train cars at a station in the rebel-held town of Torez until the arrival of an international aviation delegation.

Ukraine and the separatists accuse each other of firing a surface-to-air missile Thursday at Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 as it flew from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur some 33,000 feet above the battlefields of eastern Ukraine. Both deny shooting down the plane. All those onboard the flight - 283 passengers and 15 crew - were killed.

In another sign pointing to rebel, and Russian, responsibility for the shoot down, U.S. intelligence has detected movement of SA-11 surface-to-air-missiles - the same type responsible for downing the airliner - from rebel-held areas of Ukraine into Russian territory, CBS News chief national security correspondent David Martin reports.

The only nation in the area which had the capability of doing what you have suggested is Ukraine. Had Ukraine tried to secure the crash site, it would have suffered a lot of casualties and loss of equipment long before the crash site could have been considered secure. In the end, the crash site would have been blended in with the residue of military damage, with no guarantee that the black boxes would have been recovered, and with a certainty that the "crime scene" evidence which needed to be preserved would have been rendered useless. In short, a lot lives and equipment would have been expended to accomplish nothing.

At this point, the flight data recorders are really not necessary. It becomes more obvious with each passing day that the Russian backed separatists accidentally pulled the trigger on MH17. Their screw-up is Putin's worst nightmare and may — with some luck — bring the Europeans closer to penning him in.

What is obvious does not matter. We must keep piling on the pressure. Everyone must hate Putin and be racist towards all Russians. How could we ever enter into another Cold War, if we were not ? And the sad part is, Putin would love another cold war. In fact he is already laying the ground work within Russia. Denying press freedoms. Jailing activists. All coming to America thanks to Putin's pal Obama and the GOP-E.

I agree. While the black boxes might show the obvious, that the plane suffered catastrophic failures, they wouldn't show what type of missile was fired, where it was fired from, or who fired it. Crucial information would have to come from preserving the crime scene, and given the current situation, that would have been impossible.

Just musing here, but suppose ANWR, and many other oil exploration, development, and transportation projects like KEYSTONE had regularly been approved. Russia might threaten Europe with a cutoff of energy supplies, and Europe could immediately turn to the U.S. with no disruption to their needs. The impact on Russia would be severe, instead of being severe to Europe.

Slightly off-topic, but I've been wondering lately what could possibly explain Obama's actions on all fronts of late. The way I see it, it's one of the following:

1. Obama is a complete mediocrity - an empty suit. He's in way over his head and when he doesn't know what else to do, he goes into the only thing he does well - his campaign and fund-raise song and dance.

2. Obama is a deeply committed leftist who hates the United States and is using his power, gained through lies and media manipulation, to destroy the United States as the world's sole super power.

3. Obama is being blackmailed with kompromat, probably Russian, that probably involves deeply embarrassing personal foibles (homosexual escapades, if I were to guess) and probably even some felony political crimes AND/OR is being bribed with large sums of money deposited into foreign bank accounts, probably by Putin himself.

4. All of the above.

I think that the only thing that explains the surrender in Iraq and Afghanistan, the treason of Benghazi, the intentionally-created chaos in Syria and the rise of a new Islamic Caliphate, the humiliating retreat in Ukraine, the gutting of our manned space program, the denial of the Keystone pipeline and drill baby drill - is "D" - all of the above.
