It was wonderful.

The Ralph Vaughan Williams setting of A. E. Housman was quite good, and the tenor, who was Vietnamese-American, gave a splendid performance. I'd like to hear him try some of Benjamin Britten's works for tenor.

The Ravel sonata, which I've heard many times, got a top-notch performance with all the humor intact.

The Shostakovich vocal piece was hard on the ears, but the soprano, who is Chinese, gave it everything she had.

The pre-concert recital was a short piano piece by Schumann along with five of his songs, sung by the Chinese lady. She has a way with German lieder that makes me think she has a major career ahead of her.

All in all, a great evening.

Dohnanyi: Serenade in C for String Trio, Op. 10

Erno Dohnanyi was a protégé of Brahms and lived to a ripe old age, dying in 1960 at the age of 82. Although Hungarian, he was one of the last links to the glories of German music. This piece dates from 1902 and is in five movements.
