I don’t think so.
The rebels, or whatever they are, were all excited and bragged that they had shot down a Ukraine cargo plane.
When they found out they had shot down an airliner, they immediately withdrew all of their bragging comments, or at least that is what I have read.
If what I have read is correct, this would be a realistic chain of emotion: glee over having shot down the enemy...followed by fear of being exposed as inept murderers with resulting international repercussions.
I am not Sherlock. We see this same reaction frequently when people make really bad mistakes.
Friendly fire in the military is an example.
