On May 16, the eve of the 60th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision that outlawed racial segregation in America's public schools, Michelle Obama traveled to Topeka, Kansas, to visit the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site.
As the first lady toured the site with Stephanie Kyriazis, its chief of interpretation and education, she posed for a striking photograph that serves as a stark reminder of the segregation era. The image, taken by White House photographer Chuck Kennedy, was posted to the White House Flickr feed this week.
After her tour, Mrs. Obama delivered an equally poignant speech to the graduating classes of Topeka's high schools.
"I believe that all of you our soon-to-be-graduates you all are the living, breathing legacy of this case," Mrs. Obama said. "Not only are you beautiful and handsome and talented and smart, but you represent all colors and cultures and faiths here tonight. You come from all walks of life, and youve taken so many different paths to reach this moment. Maybe your ancestors have been here in Kansas for centuries. Or maybe, like mine, they came to this country in chains."
"Thats why were celebrating here tonight," she continued, "because the fact is that your experience here in Topeka would have been unimaginable back in 1954, when Brown v. Board of Education first went to the Supreme Court. This would not be possible."
The first lady lamented school segregation that still exists in other cities.

Not feeling any guilt here. Epic fail Shelly.
This is from 2 months ago btw,,.. I guess the ‘press’ has nothing better to do than run retreads..
Those two never miss a chance do they.
I hope she flushes before she leaves.
Thats just what this country needs right now in their leaders.
Her ancestors came here in chains.
They won’t ever stop playing the race card. They have set race relations back 50 years. Of course, they’ve got nothing else.
FUMO
Obama = the 8-year race card.
I believe people are way past tired of hearing the BS. The nation gave Obama the chance and he’s been a huge failure.
Her ancestors came here in chains.
Sold by their very own ancestors.
Exactly. Keep feeling like a victim and voting for the party of Jim Crow.
Also, this is how many days after the ‘not interested in photo ops’ statement was made???
No mention that Kansas was controlled by Democrats at the time of Brown v Board.
Ok, which way does Barack go?
The race card: Trying to convince you that a white person, who will not be born until 2065, is responsible for things that happened 200 years earlier.
Just look at the size of those hooves.
Meet Your Cousin, the First Lady: A Family Story, Long Hidden
REX, Ga. Joan Tribble held tightly to her cane as she ventured into the overgrown cemetery where her people were buried. There lay the pioneers who once populated north Georgias rugged frontier, where striving white men planted corn and cotton, fought for the Confederacy and owned slaves.
Sherry George, a member of the Shields family, has struggled with the discovery that Michelle Obama is a descendant of a slave owned by the Shieldses.
The settlers interred here were mostly forgotten over the decades as their progeny scattered across the South, embracing unassuming lives. But one line of her family took another path, heading north on a tumultuous, winding journey that ultimately led to the White House.
The white men and women buried here are the forebears of Mrs. Tribble, a retired bookkeeper who delights in her two grandchildren and her Sunday church mornings. They are also ancestors of Michelle Obama, the first lady.
Beat me to it. They’re spilling over the sides of the shoes.
“Gotta feed that rage, keep it alive.”
This isn’t having the intended effect; I’m surprised at the intolerance towards blacks I see in young whites now. They’ve been pushed too far, and don’t give any credence to the victim status.
