Is this the first recorded instance of a liberal learning from experience?

My own was watching Joe Biden and Ted Kennedy lynching Clarence Thomas. After a lifetime of voting straight Democratic, I quit quick and cold turkey.

That was my father's experience. He had just retired and discovered the joys of C-Span. He could not believe what Kennedy did (so much of it patently racist) to a man my dad had never heard of before but was instantly impressed with. Such treatment of an America citizen by a United States senator! He was angry.

Fortunately, it caused the scales to fall from his eyes. It was preparatory to the Clinton horror show.

That was the incident that did it for me as well.
