A man who spent nearly 20 years locked in a state psychiatric ward in Lincoln is suing doctors for malpractice, saying he was never mentally ill during his time there.
He was sent to the Lincoln Regional Center that year. For the next 20 years, regional center doctors and others involved in Montin's treatment relied on information from initial police reports that said Montin was delusional, rather than court records that showed otherwise.
But last year, a regional center psychiatrist found that it was medicine Montin had taken for his injured back that had led to a medication-induced psychosis. When Montin stopped taking the medication, which was long before he was committed to the regional center, the psychosis was gone. Doctors at the center simply didn't believe him for 20 years when he insisted he was not delusional.

An unfortunate part of the process.
Mentally illness is woefully mishandled from the individual to institutional, within communities, and through policy and funding.
The shrink-doctors & psychologists are worse, on average, than ordinary MDs.
AD meds are a godsend for those who actually need them, but if you can get by without them you are far better off in the long run. The biggest risk with ADs is what happens when you stop using them.
A couple I used to know had 2 kids with the mitochondrial disease. They took their kids faithfully to the doctors for treatment and the kids were taken away, because they said the Mom had the Münchausen by proxy syndrome....and it took a heck of a legal fight, but the parents were proven to be caring parents and the kids were really sick!
So, it can happen to anyone.
The “patent” didn’t understand that he was a “cash cow” for that agency and his release would have impacted on their budget.
Nothing to see here....move along.
The scary part is when the “conservatives are evil” becomes “conservatives are crazy”. Then you can’t own guns under public health mandates, perhaps stripped of the right to vote or guide your children under mental illness statutes, or just medicated to eliminate the “anxiety and paranoia”.
The abuse of psychiatry by Communists in Russia was severe, with those who didn’t see that they lived in the best place in the world “sluggish schizophrenia”. You were well when you said “this is paradise”. No wonder they all drank so much.
