Costa Rica fielded an excellent team - why shouldn't they be allowed to compete?

You realize that teams qualify for their spots, right?

No, qualifying should start in the fall of 2016. This fall starts the qualifying for Euro16, while I believe Copa America 2015 (Chile?) does not have qualifying.

I fully understand the convoluted way the Third World Cup works, how you have to qualify out of distinct geographical areas, etc.

It really brings forth the best 32 soccer playing countries in the World, let me tell you. Quotas for weaker regions where countries are not as good at soccer. That Qatar squad will be great when they host in 2022.

Countries do not get teams, their teams have to win in a rigorous two year qualifying cycle. That is why it is called the World Cup Final. The whole tournament in Brazil is the Final of various continental competitions.

Best one I can remember ... and I’m 68 years old! My only disappointment is that Messi was not more effective today. The German team did a great job on defense, but the Argentinians had several golden opportunities which they squandered.

Well those aren't nearly as exciting as a regular season NBA game that ends 117-89, with the losing team never getting within 15 points of the winner.

One of the most memorable games I have ever scene was a 0-0 draw between Stevenage and Newcastle Utd. in the FA Cup back in the 90’s.

It’s their blankie. It reminds them of participation trophies, no score keeping and pizza.

Participation trophies, no score keeping, and pizza (afterward for the players, I assume) is a purely American concept, and has yet to pollute soccer overseas.

What is the draft system in the NFL or NBA, but a way of giving weaker teams advantages to make the competition between teams more interesting?

It's no different than regional quotas, and Qatar has enough talent and resources to field a team eight years from today that can compete with other teams in the group stage.

They just got the equivalent of a handful of second and third round draft picks.

It was a great World Cup. I watched every game from Day One.

Can’t wait for 2018!

I'd bet you didn't grow up in the United States. From an American sports fan's perspective, the game of soccer is generally kind of boring but it could be made more offensive by changing some rules that hinder scoring chances. And all that flopping of players only adds to the dead time.

Then, too, the world championship today would have been determined by penalty kicks if Germany had not luckily put in a goal (that counted) right near the end. To break a tie game of ultimate importance by penalty kicks would be absurd. It's the equivalent of breaking a tie in basketball with by a free throw shooting contest.

Of course, the US's relatively early elimination from the tournament detracted from interest here in the later stages of the World Cup.

The Germans doped in ‘54, the Germans dove in ‘90, if that is something to be proud of, have at it.

Thank God. Let them have whatever sport they choose and enjoy it fully, unpolluted by liberals in America. Because here it’s become just another tool for promoting socialism.

In Brazil, Germany, Argentina, Holland and Italy there are no participation trophies - but there is plenty of scorekeeping - in youth league soccer.

But in the US, participation trophies - and even no scorekeeping - is commonplace in youth baseball and football.

Two and a half minutes of action in every quarter of an average NFL game.

Ten minutes of actual play over an average of three hours, ten minutes of TV time. One minute of NFL play per ten minutes of TV time. Thirty-one plays will be kickoffs (50+% of which will be touchbacks), field goal attempts, kneel-downs, or punts (25%+ will be fair catches).

Yet they say soccer is boring because there aren't enough scores? Isn't it boring when there's no play 90% of the time?

You mean the same ones that are given at every youth sport in the United States. What the cretins do not realize is that participation trophies are American inventions given out to Americans of all sports. In soccer and other sports around the world, there is no participation trophies. The big clubs in Europe scout the world for the best players as young as 12 to develop at their academies for one reason, to win. Barcelona plucked Messi out of Argentina when he was a preteen. The world of soccer is like the Foreign Legion’s motto, Win or Die.

Thus my comment about liberals in America.

Not only are there not participation trophies, in professional soccer, if your team sucks, you get relegated.

Here, we give teams that suck higher draft picks.
