Yup, that’s the thing about flagrant inveterate liars. They’re doing it deliberately to insult you. Didn’t realize that at first because I had never met one before. But when I moved to SF back in the early 70’s, there was a professional liar who lived in the same apartment building as me.
The guy was unbelievable. EVERYTHING he said was an outrageous, ludicrous lie. He’d look you straight in the eye and tell you that he used to be a tight rope walker with the circus before joining the Army as a private and becoming a four star general. Then he got bored with that, because after he had won the Congressional Medal of Honor there were no more challenges for him in the Army. So he joined the Navy and worked his way up to rear admiral. I’m not kidding. Those are actual lies he told me with a straight face. At first it was humorous, then infuriating. And it wasn’t always just me he was lying nonstop to. I’d shrug it off and laugh if he was just doing it because he didn’t like me or something. But he did the same thing to everyone I ever saw him interact with.
He once told me he had been to the Moon back when he was an astronaut in the CIA. So I asked him if he had ever been to Mars. Well, of course, he had! What was I thinking?!!
There is nothing to do with someone like that but to gang up on him with other folks and make vicious fun of him. BTW, you should’ve seen the eye daggers his wife shot at me when we started doing that. She was actually enabling that crap.
It’s depressing when people like him rise to the very top of government. They may not be as far gone and as mentally whacky as that guy was, and they certainly aren’t as lacking in direction, but that’s what we have in Obama, Holder, Clinton (both), etc., pathological liars.
