Knowing Beckle, who thinks he’s valuable as the token liberal, he might give a faux-pology, saying something snarky like, “Me so solly! Oops! I did it again!” and he would probably get away with it (this time). I’m pretty sure there have been a couple of times when Bob uttered the “F” word on the air. Still, there he sits, unbowed, unburdened by guilt.
I listened to a bit of The Five the other day. It was their third anniversary show, and they talked about best moments.
Beckel talked about how often he’s had to apologize on the show (and then apologized for recently calling Italians ‘greaseballs’, saying the word again) and then said “Hey, I am what I am.” I disagree with much of what he says, but that remark was a bit refreshing in a time when everyone and his brother falls over themselves apologizing for this or that in the big worldwide movement to homogenize thought and opinion into a bland, colorless borefest.
I’m not saying everyone should be hurling racial epithets, but the oversensitivity in this culture has created a powerful weapon in the hands of those who want to control the words of others. I’d like to see that weapon depowered.
