Army to replace 9mm pistol with more reliable gun packing better 'knock down’ power

The Army wants to retire its supply of 9mm handguns and replace it with a more accurate and user-friendly model that also will provide soldiers with more “knock-down” power.

Army officials say their inventory of more than 200,000 semi-automatic Beretta M9 and Sig Sauer M11 pistols has become outdated, worn out and needs to be replaced with an updated model that also offers more reliability and durability.

Concur on fit being the main issue. No one can hit crap with a shotgun that has a pull that is 1” too long. Recoil is a factor in practice. I never noticed anything resembling recoil from my .444 when hunting, but 10 rds at the range is uncomfortable.

My original point was that the problem with selecting a great pistol/cartridge combo is going to be the need to have women qualify with it. They didn’t used to accept men that were that short, for the same reasons.

Well that’s a shame but Wilson Combat or Colt could probably refurbish them but then it would save money so Congress will never go for it.

“I don’t agree with the people claiming the 45 is too much for women. My wife, all 5 ft 4 and 105 lbs of her, loves her S&W 1911 - full size, not a commanders version.”

Hope you weren’t referring to me. I re-read my postings and made no such assertion. However, I will say that the 45 acp is not for every woman. Btw, if a woman is going to shoot some version of the 1911 the full size is best as the commander kicks up quite a bit more. I have both and I prefer the full sized and I’m 6’4”, 240 lbs.

Your are correct when you say the Geneva Convention does not allow HP rounds. This restriction applies only to military services and combat. Government agencies like Treasury, FBI, Homeland Security are not restricted by the Geneva Convention, so they are free to HP bullets to their hearts content.

The 8mm Mauser is the same caliber the Germans lost WWI and WWII with. Don’t think anyone would call the 8mm Mauser an anemic or ineffective round.

Sorry, no that wasn't "aimed" at you - more of a general comment on the thread. ;-)

Yes, size matters - in handguns. As I said, wife likes her full size stainless 1911...hates shooting her Ruger 380 LCP. A lot less of a cartridge, but that is a "snappy" little pistol that is no fun to shoot. The only thing it has going for it is that it is so small you can have it with you just about anytime. Me, I always find a way to carry my Glock G19. I also have a 5.11 tactical vest that I can concealed carry wife's 1911 in. (when I can sneak it away from her! ;-)

If it’s anything like the XM9 trials they will have made a decision about a new pistol in about 20 years or so.

Appears you and I are on a similar track when it comes to wives and guns. I too bought my wife a 380; is a Walther PPK. But, she doesn’t care to shoot it. I also bought her a 38spl Ruger 21/2” stainless Speed Six some years ago. She actually prefers this gun when traveling. As you know I’m sure, the two most important factors when it comes to handguns are the functioning of the gun and hitting the target. If that happens in a high threat situation then the out one will be positive. Hence, the double action Speed Six as her weapon of choice - it’s simple, pull the trigger and it goes bang :)
