Authorities have discovered a body alongside the motorcycle of a Westchester day trader who disappeared in Mexico in January while traveling across Latin America, according to published reports.
The ominous find of 32-year-old Harry Devert's green Kawasaki bike next to the remains wrapped in a black plastic bag was made on a dirt road leading to La Majahua beach in the township of Union Isidoro Montes de Oca, Mexican officials said Friday.
The abandoned bike's vehicle-identification number matched that of Devert's, his mother, Ann Devert, told the Daily Mail on Friday. Ten packages of what appeared to be marijuana and cocaine were found near the motorcycle and body, according to a statement from the Guerrero office of public security.
Devert disappeared Jan. 25, while 44 days into a trans-Latin American motorcycle trip in which the former day trader planned to ride in Central and South America.

My son came to me a couple of years ago and said he was going to go with some friends to Mexico and then travel to Brazil for the World Cup - I gave him a hug - he asked what I did that for I said “Well there’s a good chance you won’t come back so I though I would get as many hugs in as I can”. - He didn’t end up going - one of his friends did but it was a corporate trip paid by his boss - my boy couldn’t afford that!

I didn’t know that; I don’t believe remains of any of them were ever found. The whole “Killing Fields” thing was very creepy; I’d highly recommend the book (a short read) for anyone interested in the “Year Zero” experiment in Kampuchea from 1975 to 1979.
We have taken many trips to Mexico, most Texans have but after a couple of scary incidents we said never again.
Your intuition is working well; trust it.
Between 1993 and 2000 I would go to Cabo San Lucas once or twice a year.
In 2000 I chose never to go back.
What persuaded me?
I am fluent in Spanish, but don't "look it" and my English has no hint of any foreign origin.
And everywhere I went, I heard stuff hostile to Americans, getting worse each year.
Plus, the few local professional friends we made kept telling us about murders, rapes and abductions of Americans never reported in the local "tourist" press.

We bought a '95 Toyota 4Runner in BElize from a Belizean who for years has been making trips to California to buy clean older cars and then return to Belize to sell them there.
He told us that he no long will make these trips - too dangerous now.
Driving over to Chetumal or up to Cancun is no problem, though.
Always happens. Give it enough time and you eventually see the savage reality of Mexico.

Back in 1968, just after the 1968 Gun Control act was passed, it was pointed out to a newspaper editor that more people were murdered with KNIVES in Mexico than guns in the USA.
The editor poo-pooed the report with a ...”That is because Mexico has a cult of “Macho” which we do not have here.”

Mexican authorities have found remains they believe to be Devert’s in two plastic bags with a motorcycle in La Union, in the state of Guerrero, according to news reports in Mexico and a blog that covers the cartel drug war in that country.
A 1999 graduate of Pelham High School, Devert disappeared while traveling through Mexico by motorcycle, planning to make it to Brazil for the World Cup. The 32-year-old’s last texts to his girlfriend said he had just been escorted “out of some area it was too dangerous for me to be” and that he was waiting for a second escort.
He was in an area southwest of Mexico City known for clashes between local vigilante groups and the cartels.
And if he were a government agent doing secret squirrel type things, it might also have been left alone or even planted to "leave a message".
Not nearly enough info to make a good guess up, but the stories are fun anyway.
He also wrote, “Incident At Owl Creek” which was one of the few stories ever written about a military combatant killing a fellow team member to put him out of misery after being wounded with no hope of survival. A subject that is taboo among military. This story may have been based upon personal experience as he was a Union Major in the Civil War that saw substantial action.
