Hagel: ISIS poses an 'imminent' threat to US

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Wednesday the Sunni fundamentalist group the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) poses a threat not just to the government in Baghdad, but to the United States as well.
"This country should not make any mistake on this, nor anyone in Congress — this is a threat to our country," Hagel said while meeting with troops at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in Georgia.
"This is a force that is sophisticated. It's dynamic, it's strong, it's organized, it's well-financed, it's competent, [ISIS]. And it is a threat to our allies all over the Middle East. It's a threat to Europe. It's a threat to every stabilized country on Earth, and it's a threat to us," Hagel said.
He added that the Pentagon was getting daily assessments from troops deployed on the ground in Iraq, and the "finality of those assessments will be completed in the next few days." The administration has said that assessment would form the basis of next steps for the U.S. in Iraq, which is battling a terrorist takeover by ISIS.
"We'll have a further context of what recommendations they'll make. In the meantime, we're doing everything we can, as I said in those two general areas, protect our people and assist [Iraqi Security Forces] in their efforts to defeat [ISIS]," Hagel said.
In response to a threat to Baghdad, President Obama has ordered about 650 U.S. troops to Iraq, in addition to the 100 already there.
Those troops are helping to reinforce the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and other diplomatic facilities, as well as to conduct assessments on the security situation, which includes the flying of armed and unarmed drones.
"We are assisting in every way we can to help the Iraqi people defeat the brutal fundamentalists," Hagel said.
"[ISIS] may not appear to be an imminent threat to the United States. It is a threat to the United States. It is a threat, clear threat to our partners in that area, and it is imminent," he said.

That poses a real problem for Hagel, since if he wants to go after the ISIS leader, he's going to have to get past the Secret Service guys at the White House front door.

And just this week, like I read every couple of months, we spend more money on our military than the next 10 (or more) countries combined.
Could we defeat them in battle, if they all decided to fight us at the same time...NO WAY. Could we beat any of them if all others stayed out - hopefully.

There was a reasonable way to cut Defense Spending. This wasn't it.
We cut so fast that the US military is now a hollow force.

ISIS does not present an imminent threat to the US. It presents a potential threat to the US.
Now, if he’s talking about our troops or huge diplomatic staff now in Iraq, then that could be seen as imminent. But, that is not a threat to the “United States of America”.
And, a word smith could argue that threatening our embassy or troops is a legal threat to the homeland, but Benghazi sort of negates such an effort at sophistry.
If you imagine all that is the nation as a huge business, it is a business generating a GDP, iirc, of about 18 trillion a year. The ownership takes about 4 trillion out of it each year to pay off the employees, stakeholders, stockholders. They borrow, iirc, another 2 trillion, so they spend 6 trillion out of a total generation capacity of 18 trillion.
That 18 trillion funds other levels of government, people’s incomes, business transactions, everything imaginable, all the way down to little Suzy buying a bag of M&Ms.
The government is directly taking about 22.3% out of the system.
The question is this: what percent can the ownership take out before they injure the ability of that business to function?
I think it is threat the US populace is so focused on visual imagery as a result of the electronic culture that BHO and friends know that an Iraqi version of the fall of Saigon would get even the brain numbed sensualists that make up a large part of the population to blame BHO for the burning city and mass murder they would be watching fascinated and horrified at the same time. So to save his posterior BHO will do something to try and prop up the Iraqi government. There is also the problem I alluded to of the thousands of US and western nationals working in Iraq including a good many females. You can imagine what would happen to these people if ISIS gets into Baghdad. Watching American or just western females paraded around naked and bound by the ISIS warriors would also deal a possibly fatal blow to the Mahdi's legacy. A real NEO op would be very big.and involve several thousand boots on the ground and a lot of combat and transport air assets so the stage is being set. Unfortunately the Mahdi and his handlers don't know anything about milops and take forever to agree on a course of action so things could get very messy.
