None of my two-wheel escapades could compare. When I was still in High School I had a Benelli 125cc - 2 cycle, of course - that I used to run up to Annapolis from my home in Silver Spring - about 35 miles over back roads. Some beautiful Autumn afternoons on the road to and from my Uncle Jack Dowd's - and my favorite Aunt, Virginia Gavin Dowd.

Sadly, the roads through which I used to wend on that trek are either gone or utterly changed. No more two-lane country roads - no more one-lane bridges in this area.

Uncle Jack and Aunt Virginia have gone to their well-earned rest in the Bosom of the Lord and I am now the Senior member of my extended family.

Thank the Lord for the guidance, example and love they, and so many of my family, have bestowed upon me.

Much of what I am now hinges upon the lessons I learned as an adolescent trekking up the back-roads of central Maryland on a small bike half a century ago.

I used to love riding Rt 55 through West Virginia, but the last time I was there, a new interstate was being built .

I suppose it is important to supply the people in the area, but it made me kind of sad.

I have recently taken to driving the same routes I used to ride via satellite on my computer. I can usually zoom to about 60 ft, and see details that remind me of my journeys.I have also “flown surveillance” over places I would never in a lifetime get to visit, and I am keeping a log.

Some of the places I have been are quite interesting; Kabul, Lhasa, Three Gorges Dam in China, Archangel and Murmansk, Saigon, Paris, Rome, London, Kodiak Island, Rio de Janiero, Machu Pichu, Petra, and the Taj Mahal..

Yesterday, I went to Medina,KSA, and zeroed in on the Green Domed “tomb of Mohamed”.

Alas, I had only a mouse with me at the time.
