I knew a Japanese woman who married a U.S. Marine and came to the U.S. with him. Before she was allowed into the U.S. she had to pay for a HIV test and prove that she did not have aids. Different rules for different ethnic groups.

My wife, from Thailand, had to have a thorough physical in Thailand and then, the hospital she came to work at, gave here another check. Additionally, her job history and lack of criminal history were checked and verified. She came to the USA for a nursing job and for her desire to be an American citizen eventually. Her English proficiency was checked as well. She became a citizen five years and a few month later.
