Leave the franks whole, but slip a wooden skewer into them and spiral cut the frank then cook it with the skewer out.

Yeah-—I saw that recipe.

Even easier-—I make 1/8” cuts tip to tip-—when pan-grilled in butter, the cuts crisp up and brown, and are very tasty.
