The Real Internal Revenue Scandal
NY Times ^ | July 5, 2014 | NY Times Editorial Board

Posted on 07/06/2014 7:03:17 AM PDT by Innovative

There is a scandal going on at the Internal Revenue Service, but it has nothing to do with Lois Lerner or her missing emails.

No, the real scandal is what Republicans did to cripple the agency when virtually no one was looking. Since the broad Tea Party-driven spending cuts of 2010, the agency’s budget has been cut by 14 percent after inflation is considered, leading to sharply reduced staff, less enforcement of the tax laws and poor taxpayer service.

The budget cutters are also trying to prevent the agency from performing its new job of collecting higher taxes on the rich to pay for health care reform, and distributing health insurance subsidies for low- and moderate-income people, many of whom will now be covered for the first time.

Since the broad Tea Party-driven spending cuts of 2010...

Didn't the Democrats control the House, Senate and White House in 2010?

How do they get away with this crap?

Better yet, let's get rid of the 16th Amendment and go back to the original Constitution.

Institute a national sales tax and eliminate the IRS all together. The states can use their infrastructure to collect the tax and send the proceeds directly to the Treasury in Washington.

Who needs the IRS anyway? Only politicians who want to manipulate the tax code for their friends and votes!!

I smell "base line budgeting" with a little inflation exaggeration.

The budget cutters are also trying to prevent the agency from performing its new job of collecting higher taxes on the rich to pay for health care reform, and distributing health insurance subsidies for low- and moderate-income people, many of whom will now be covered for the first time.

That is plain pandering to stupid people, the dem base.

So let me get the Times’ hidden implication straight. If we raise the IRS budget, they’ll stop breaking the law. Right? hmm... I’ll have to think about that next time I vote.

16,000 new agents in the wake of obamacare is a cut?

The only meaningful cut of the IRS would be total abolition. They are the US Gestapo.

Just think how many resources could be redirected to “enforcing” obamacare if they weren’t wasting time targeting conservative groups. The entire IRS payroll is a sunk cost, they just need to manage it better.

Due to the dramatic increase in online tax-filing, costs SHOULD be falling.

Why should we care?????

They closed “Comments section”

after Freepers got a hold of this sparkling display of public sector union bias - er, I mean dazzling political argumentation and pristine logic.

What a coincidence!!!!!!!!!!

and countless other vital government tasks....Name’em. Give to Unions? Let John Corzine go? Give corporate cronies more money? Steal from Cliven Bundy? Give bonuses to government people who don’t pay any taxes? Or just put pressure on the few people left who have job, stocks or savings? I’m cornfused.

They always frame the argument with their bias. What the Republicans are doing is the right of Congress to control the purse strings. What the administration/IRS is doing is illegal.

The Sequester and its absence of ill effects proved that federal agencies easily adjust to reduced budgets.
