KIEV, Ukraine With a fierce onslaught of gunfire and mortar shelling, Ukrainian government forces on Saturday expelled pro-Russian insurgents from Slovyansk, a long-blockaded rebel stronghold, government officials and separatist leaders said.
After rebels fled the city, the site of some of the fiercest battles throughout the insurrection, government forces raised the blue-and-yellow Ukrainian national flag above the City Council building.
In retaking Slovyansk, Ukrainian forces did not necessarily deal a decisive blow to the rebels, but they were finally gaining traction and reasserting state authority in eastern Ukraine, three months after separatists seized cities and towns throughout the region, fracturing this country of 45 million people.

Ha, how can people not see that this former KGB Colonel of 16 years turned super ultra nationalist and self proclaimed true defender of the Christian faith is a huge fraud?
How ironic. What these people want is freedom from Ukraine and their EU Puppet Masters.
At least for the moment, this is good news. It will be interesting to see if and how Putin may respond.
There is something important to keep in mind throughout this whole situation: The relatively “European” scale and distances involved here. For example, Hlukhiv, the closest (driving distance) Ukraine town of any size (36,000) to Moscow, is only 562 km / 349 miles (driving distance) from the center of Moscow.
This is not to suggest that Kiev could / would / should (at any point) threaten Moscow, but given Russian attitudes & Putin’s KGB background, at least some of Putin’s motives are more readily understood.
Still... Putin has in my view made a large mistake. Rather than give Ukraine positive reasons to stay close, as a traditional ally and friend, he has opted instead for a relatively small “buffer” area (plus Crimea), and alienated Kiev.
How weird that you equate freedom from your admired Putin with that guy...who is he?
