I’m convinced that this whole episode involves weapons which were scheduled to go to the Syrian rebels and were preempted by al Qaeda backed factions which wanted the final say in where they were headed.

I think you are very likely correct. Here is how I look at it:
1. Libyan Rebels, some AL Qaeda associated.
2. Libyan weapons
3. Likely some American weapons
4. Syria
5. Turkey
6. CIA contractors
7. Syrian Rebels (many Al Qaeda associated)
We need to find out who was doing what and what weapons were going to whom.

Or perhaps the attack was financed and coordinated by agents of Syria or Iran who masked their true affiliation from the hired jihadists.
