The only U.S. POTUS in my lifetime I do miss is Reagan. None since come even close to his wisdom and leadership.
I was a Master Sergeant, and I was leading the detail over by the General Sherman Monument. I saw you drive off to Andrews in the Presidential limo and I thought, there goes the best President of my lifetime. Everyone was shouting, “There goes Reagan, there goes Reagan!” and snapping pictures. I ordered a “Present, Arms” to the detail and did not “Order, Arms” until your limo rounded 17th Street and disappeared out of view.
*The military has played a role in inauguration ceremonies since George Washington received the oath of office on the steps of Federal Hall in New York in 1789. Ever 4 years, more than 13,500 military personnel including those on active-duty, reservists, and members of the National Guard and the Coast Guard direct traffic, manage crowds, march in the parade and form its honorary cordon.
