Mozart: Quartet for Flute and Strings in D, K. 285

Mozart did not like the flute. His favorite wind instrument was the oboe, and he fell in love with the clarinet in the last year of his life. But his father pressured him to write for the flute, which was the trendy instrument of the time. Wolfgang was only 21, and he was still taking a lot of crap from his father, while behind the old man’s back, he was sticking out his tongue at the pushy old pedant.

This piece is in three movements. The first is an “allegro” in D Major. The slow movement is an “adagio” in B minor, conjoined with the finale, a rondo marked “allegro” in D Major. This is charming music for sensible people.

The audience in this video applauds between movements, which is a definite no-no.

I love the flute, but, in a way, I can understand Mozart’s preference for the lower-sounding instruments. I am like that too. I would much rather play bass than guitar, and guitar rather than the ukelele!

I love to actually FEEL the lower frequencies in my body.

Unlike Chrissy Matthews who prefers tingles. LOL!

There are some good chamber works out there for flute, but Mozart didn’t write them.
