The city of Berkeley will require medical marijuana dispensaries to give away two percent of the amount of cannabis they sell each year free to low-income patients.
The City Council voted unanimously at Tuesdays meeting to amend the citys medical pot rules, which would also allow for a fourth dispensary in Berkeley.
Under the proposal, at least two percent of all medical weed dispensed at a club would have to be provided at no cost to very low-income members and it must be the same quality thats dispensed to regular paying customers.

I believe with nothing else changed, the result of more liberal marijuana policy will be a number of people switching from the bottle to the joint.
Pot has its own hazards. And people can do harm to themselves thereby. But maybe it will be less harm than alcohol does.
The ultimate answer is not found in this world, but from beyond it reaching in. The original 12 step group was not with some nebulous higher power, but Christ was specifically identified.
Can they legally force a business (even dope growers) to give away their product? I don’t see how that’s not illegal.
That’s what I’m hoping. Heaven knows I don’t support weed growers, but this is a different issue. If they can do it to them, they can do it to a legitimate business.
“Can they legally force a business (even dope growers) to give away their product? I dont see how thats not illegal.”
Apparently Berkeley thinks they can do it...
This looks to me that something that should go all the way to the SCOTUS — and then Judge Roberts can decide that “it’s a tax”, therefore it’s legal, just as he did with Obamacare.
Then, as some of us were pointing out, the government will be able to compel businesses to support “the indigent” by giving them free drugs, free food, free housing, free cars, free refrigerators, free anything they want...
Can you legally smoke medical marijuana in a no smoking area? The ADA might say it is okay...
Do they also get free cocaine and heroine? If not, I think this is very discriminatory.
Medical weed.

What's funny? The medicinal properties of cannabis are well established.
Yes exactly. It’s time I gave “Brave New World” another read. Children had to be active in “sexual play” or there was something wrong with them.
Huxley was interview in I think the 1970s, he wrote BNW in the ‘30s. He said he was amazed how much of it had come true, he never thought he would see it.
Most people who want medical weed want it for getting stoned.
The medical properties can be extracted from it - research is being done - so it can help with medical issues without taking peoples’ ability to think rationally or have functioning nervous systems away.
Having smoked mj and hashish in my youth, and been a heavy drinker right before that, I know for a fact that mj is more dangerous than liquor. And the mj now is infinitely stronger than what I used decades ago. It’s a long topic but mj is much more seductive and affects rational thinking in a way that people think is not happening. A drunk knows he’s drunk.
Sure. Smoking is good for you.
Um, you’ve never heard of dry drunk?
No idea what dry drunk is. But I do know first hand the effects of alcohol and mj and how they compare.
I just searched and found what a dry drunk is.
What is the point you want to make about this?
23 states and DC have enacted such programs. I would guess in another 1 or 2 election cycles, a majority of states will have them.
Should have noted that except for NY, the above states do not currently have medical mj.
I doubt you can give evidence for "most"; I'm sure some do. Some acquire painkillers for getting stoned ... should we ban those?

What should sick people do in the meantime: wait and suffer?
My extended experience with both substances led me to the opposite conclusion.
And the mj now is infinitely stronger than what I used decades ago.
And liquor is much stronger than beer; what of it? Stronger pot just means less smoke inhaled to get high.
Sure. Smoking is good for you.
Marijuana, like many medications, has some negative side effects. Should we ban all medications with negative side effects?
