We also should have severe penalties in place that are enforced, Bill, against employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants who undercut the American worker and the legal immigrants who want to earn a decent wage. Severe civil penalties. If they have to be criminal penalties for successive violations, we have to do that.

There's the rub. The Republican Party will not stand for meaningful sanctions against businesses for hiring illegals. There are too many important interest groups within the GOP who have become dependent upon illegal aliens and cheap wages. Just look around and see who is getting all the jobs now - at your favorite restaurants, at hotels, at golf courses, at health care facilities, at the car wash, at the auto body shops, at the construction sites, etc., etc., etc.

If they can't find work, they won't come. Everyone knows that. Employment is the key. Employers must be punished. Notice how even Laura is careful to say that criminal sanctions should only be available for "successive violations." The GOP is not going to go after employers in any meaningful way because important supporters are addicted to cheap illegal labor.

The Democrats want illegals here for their votes. The Republican party wants them here for their cheap labor.

THAT'S WHY THEY'RE HERE AND THAT'S WHY NEITHER PARTY EVER DOES ANYTHING TO CHANGE THE STATUS QUO.

The schools have no choice when it comes to providing K-12 education. The Supreme Court made that mandatory with Plyler vs Doe in 1982. In Fairfax County, Virginia they pay $104 million a year for ESOL instruction for 31,000 students.

*******

That 1982 Supreme Court ruling is the reason we need Constitutional amendments like the following to try to control illegal immigration:

1. "School attendance: Only citizens, legal residents, those with special student visas can attend elementary, high school, and colleges in the United States."

2. "One parent must be a citizen before a newborn child is given automatic citizenship."

3. Felony: We must finally declare that crossing the border illegally is a felony.

Illegal parents come to the United States for the wonderful benefits that their children can receive, like a quality education and great health care. Can you blame them for making the dangerous, long trip with their young children, or sending their children by themselves with the hope that the United States will automatically let them stay?

I don't understand how a child can illegally cross the southern border one day and automatically be eligible to enroll in public school the next day. That is wrong.

The kicker is if we make them all citizens tomorrow morning the advantages of hiring them will melt away and those businesses will want more cheap labor to replace them. Rinse and repeat. Businesses that hire illegals see nothing wrong with the taxpayer making up the difference between what they pay illegals and what it costs for them to be here.
