Making the electricity grid greener is boosting its vulnerability to computer hacking, increasing the risk that spies or criminals can cause blackouts.

Adding wind farms, solar panels and smart meters to the power distribution system opens additional portals through which hackers can attack the grid, according to computer security experts advising governments and utilities. Where traditionally the grid took power from a few sources, it’s now absorbing it from thousands.

Not to worry. I've been assured by NVEnergy that the smart meter attached to my elec and gas can't be hacked. Guess I'm home free now. /S

Couple the hacking vulnerabilities with the fact that IWTs and solar by their very nature increase vulnerability due to their random and unpredictable supply and you got a real problem. Time to go totally off grid....

50 years from now the internet may play a smaller roll in our lives than the techies are presuming.

Take e-magazine sales, for example - they are going down. People have begun to realize that it’s better to just have a printed magazine.

Russia just bought a bunch of typewriters, as another example, and now they place their most top secret information on paper instead of a computer.

Computers/internet is/are awesome, but mightily flawed when it comes to security.

The smart meters are a great example of how a neat idea can also be a very, very stupid idea.
